There are still a lot of keyboard shortcuts which, for me at least, are a benefit, because for someone who's been tested at a typing speed of 110 wpm, I get slowed down whenever I have to take my hands off the keyboard for any reason, so keystrokes are good for me.
That said, you can set the User Preferences how you like, and there's a huuuuge list of them, so it might take a while to get them to suit how you work. I wouldn't recommend trying to do them all at once, but over time you can find mouse strokes to suit. Even those that are already set up for left, right or middle mouse button can be changed. Not everyone's right-handed, so they had to make that adjustable for each user.
I've been using Blender since the old 2.4x series, and that interface was horrid. When the current UI came into existence with 2.5x (I think my first was 2.52), I felt it was much more professional, and easier to use. For those who've never used it before, yes it can be daunting. It takes time to get used to, and a lot of folks, for one reason or another, just don't want to take the time. I don't blame them, to each his own, as the saying goes.
