FINAL RENDER

The Dullahan

halloween entry.Jpg

The Dullahan, headless rider and harbinger of the dead, is one of the strangest of the Fae. The Dullahan rides through town holding it's detached head under it's arm and calls the names out of those who will pass away in moments. Once it calls out a name that person passes, and his or her soul comes to the Dullahan to be escorted to the unknown. Should curiosity get the better of you, and you go outside or open a window to look, the Dullahan will chastise you for not respecting the dead by splashing you in the face with a bucket of blood. Excluding the more famous legends of Dullahan such as the headless horseman and Crom Dubh, Dullahan tend not to harm the living. That is of course unless it's your time.

Welcome @Me195 to the Hive!!

A very neat character and I love how you have used the emissive lighting effects! The flesh on head of the Dullahan supposedly looks like green cheese!

Celty, from the anime series Durarara is a favorite Dullahan of mine, but having a strong Irish background I used to hear tales of them as a kid from my grandparents along with the bogies and bogarts and banshees.

@luannemarie Gorgeous Renders!! I have been eyeing that crown over at Daz myself!!

Thank you for saying so. The souls, Skeletal-horse's eyes, the stars, and the moon all use the emissive effect. Apparently I love that effect. It's just too bad that Superfly's support for video card rendering is still a WIP. Using my processor to render all of that took 36 hours. I actually thought of making a green cheese like texture for Dawn's head and a morph to give her that Dullahan ear to ear grin. I decided against it because the pseudo-darkness light set up I used would have made it look like blue cheese instead. Celty is actually the one that reminded me of all of those stories I heard growing up. She is my favorite character in Durarara. Thanks again for the kind words.

I've been so busy with getting my Glass Block Bathroom product whipped into shape that I haven't done much of anything else. Tonight I just plain burned out and needed a distraction so I went browsing through the forums and came across this thread. It immediately reminded me of a render I did years ago (2010). The render doesn't have any HiveWire products in it, so I can't enter the contest, but I wanted to post it anyway, just for grins. :D

It was so long ago that I can't remember why I made a Fright Times cover out or it, but I assume it must have been for a contest. The inspirations for this image came from two sources - one was the infamous dogs-playing-poker painting(s) and the other was from an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer in which Spike took Buffy to a poker game where the vampires and other creatures of the night used kittens for betting currency. This just struck me as hilarious - big bad demons playing for kittens!

So that's where I came up with the idea for this render.

I thought about remaking it with the HiveWire kitten to meet the contest requirements, but don't know if I have the time.

Besides, I don't know if I could beat the other great renders already entered!

Great, creative work people!

For those not familiar with the dogs-playing poker paintings, there are a number of different ones, but this is the one I based my render on. It's actually in the render background.

That's the dogs playing poker painting I remember. Don't recall if I ever saw your rendition of it Beth, but I like it.

I think that's the original version, but there have been many copy-cat and homage paintings since. A quick Google search for "dogs playing poker" will reveal tons of them.

I can't forget it after one Xmas spent scouring the local malls and art shops for a copy (though some may argue the word "art" when referring to this painting ;)). One of my brothers had just built a bar in his basement and I knew this painting was something he'd get a kick out of adding to its decor . I never did find it though - this was in the days before online shopping made finding specialty items like this easy.

LOL!! I have been there! My brother has this picture hanging on the wall behind the pool table in his entertainment room. I always wondered what they would do to the dog cheating if they found out LOL!!
