I'm in the east (Norfolk)and we have had no buses for 3 days I'm really hoping that the worst has passed us I need to do some food shopping, There's no where here in the village to get bread or milk, as long as the butchers is open I can get meat and veg if they have any, and I have a full freezer so we won't starve, unless you are a s 16 year old who thinks that as we have run out of crisps and snack stuff there's nothing to eat. We haven't lost electricity or anything and we don't have gas, we use oil heating so as long as that doesn't run out.
Hornet I hope it doesn't hit you too hard. I saw the warnings on the news about the red areas so stay safe and warm.

Glad you are coping albeit with maybe some changes to diet. I have been watching the news on a regular basis have seen that the forecast that the east would be hit first and hard has been proved correct so I hope there is respite for you soon. We have been very lucky so far with little snow and the worse problem being the wind chill factor if you did venture out. Happily there is little I have to do over the next few days, we do have gas but if that fails we do have enough electric heaters to stay warm, assuming we do not lose the electric as well. We have some shops in walking distance, providing they get stocked, but walking could be an issue soon. We cleared the snow from the back door an hour ago have just opened it again to let the dog out on his late night visit to the garden and it is a foot or so deep by the door again already. Not that the snow it that deep generally but the strong wind is making for blizzard conditions.

I hope you too stay safe and warm and that things improve very quickly.

Actually, without wanting to open that whole debate, there are a few misconceptions floating around. For one, climate change will mean that it gets warmer everywhere, all the time. Well, it actually doesn't work that way. It is only the average temperature that rises, as measured over long periods of time. That average temperature could mean uniformly warmer temperatures, or it could also mean more widely fluctuating temperatures, including abnormally cold ones. Unfortunately, it is the latter that seems to be the more likely scenario.

Regarding the abnormally cold temperatures experienced periodically in parts of Europe and North America that traditionally have not experienced such weather with such frequency, would you be incredulous if I were to say that the fact that your weather is colder is because the weather is getting warmer? In fact, that is the case. In the past there is a phenomenon that occurs routinely each winter in the northern hemisphere that the popular media have unfortunately misrepresented (big surprise). It is called the Polar Vortex. The latter is a weather pattern that tends to form over the north pole each winter, driven by the normally extremely cold temperatures there, whereby a very cold, dense air mass forms, drawing surrounding arctic air inwards in a swirling vortex (thus polar and vortex). This vortex tends to hold the cold arctic air in the arctic, although some periodic fluctuations can occur. The lower the temperatures over the north pole, the stronger the vortex. What has been happening more recently is the result of abnormally warmer temperatures over the pole have weakened the polar vortex to a greater degree and with greater frequency, and this allows the frigid arctic air to flow south with similarly greater frequency and/or to a greater extent than would normally be the case. So, in fact, it is warmer weather (over the pole), that is responsible for weather getting colder than normal in areas to the south that wouldn't traditionally expect it. If it gets warmer, its going to get colder, depending on where you happen to be.

My comment was very much 'tongue in cheek' or slightly flippant for those not familiar with the saying. I am not an expert but I have sort of understood that global warming would result in more extreme weather events not just hotter but I thank you for adding to my understanding of the phenomenon.

Well so far our luck is holding, we have passed the red and amber warnings with little additional snow. Winds are still high and, for the UK, bitterly cold with some freezing rain making pavements and roads treacherous. Still have a gas supply and the latest news on that is that it is the businesses that will loose out not consumers. Bad news for businesses but then I expect this is just one more cost they will have to bear due to the bad weather, let's hope the supply holds up. Still reports of people being stranded in cars over night and one unlucky set of computers being stuck on a stranded train for fifteen hours when power to the overhead supply failed. At least the army has now been called in to get them rescued.

I hope all those that are still suffering are coping and that the situation changes soon.

We are snowed in here today. Snow up to our waists in places and our garden gate is as far as we dare to go. Cars can't get out of their driveways and when they can, they often get stuck in snow before they can make it to the main roads which are a bit clearer of snow. All the shops closed, same with petrol stations.
Apart from all that, we are doing well. No cuts to electricity or internet in our area yet, so we have stuff to do when we get tired playing in the snow.

As is usual for the UK, as soon as any snow settles everything grinds to a halt! That said, we have some very nasty black ice around here which is making the roads dangerous (and making me really miss my 4X4). We've had maybe 3-4 inches of snow here. I finished building the shell of the sheep shelter just as the first snow was falling yesterday, so they can get out of the weather if they want to (although they're Shetland sheep, as far as they're concerned even freezing point is soft Southern living).

Hope everyone else in the UK or in colder parts has heating (we don't, bleh, broken boiler), cooking facilities, electricity, Internet and a good stock of food!

And snow. Heavy, wet, big flake snow. When I left the periodontist, it was just starting to switch from rain to snow. Half hour later, it was near blizzard conditions.

This is the kind of snow that drives Tsuki nuts. She keeps trying to climb the window to get at the falling snow.

We had heavy rain early, but then it stopped a few hours ago. That said, however, the winds are still howling at 40-50 mph.

Of course, there's no guarantee we won't see snow tonight or tomorrow, though I'm definitely NOT looking forward to it.

It's pretty windy here now. There were a few tree down in the area, but from the looks, they were already dead.
I think one was murdered by a shady looking maple though... Very suspicious.
The winds are around 35-40 mph, with gusts of 65+... So that's like a regular Nor'easter here.
Earlier I was at Home Despot and the parking lot was starting to flood... There was maybe a foot of water in some places... Nothing bad (conversational flooding), but I stopped to take a picture to show my kids and as I'm about to take the picture, I see this shopping cart go cruising by.
At first I thought someone pushed it, but then I noticed it going through the water and not slow down much... Then as the wind shifted it turned and started heading back... Then I noticed two more doing the same thing.
They made it back and forth a few times before they tipped over... There were a bunch of them sideway which I thought the store had placed like that to keep people out of the water, but apparently that's where they all go to tip over.
It was kind of cool, they looked like remote control or demonically possessed shopping carts.

Well, I was just listening to the weather report on the news, and there has been lots of downed trees and power lines all over the city, and on Long Island where McGyver lives. There's also been flooding near the coastal communities. We didn't have a large rainfall, but areas upstate had upwards of 8-12 inches of rain. Talk about flooding.

West of us in New Jersey had a good amount of snow, and the winds are still pretty bad, though not quite as bad as it was earlier.

I really feel for people who are affected by this and I hope McGyver is safe and well along with everyone else. We had no more snow overnight and the winds have dropped. I know a lot of people are fed up with the show and want it to be gone but I can't help thinking that when all the snow does go we are also going to suffer from a lot of flooding which has a much more long term impact in some cases.

Fingers crossed everyone is safe. Here in the UK they are reporting that nine people have lost their lives due to the appauling weather and that is nine too many.

Woke up to snow and black ice in the morning. Meanwhile sun is trying to get thru the clouds and most of the snow on the streets is gone; same cannot be said for my garden, grass is still snow-covered.
