What Is Your Favorite TV Show?

Actually, the original plan was for two films until one of the backers with a little bit of foresight (and I would say backbone) asked Peter Jackson, "Isn't it supposed to be a trilogy" and three films were shot instead of two. Considering how well the pictures did at the box office and the critical acclaim, 17 Oscars including 11 for the Return of the King, I think you are doing yourself a disservice by not seeing the movies. It's true. No film is going to follow the book exactly but they can do a pretty good job at telling the story. I think they did. Heck, The Wizard of Oz is actually pretty tapped down from the book but ignoring the movie mean you ignored a treat.

The biggest problem you might run into is that you're going to check it out the DVD version/Blue Ray version. It was made for the big screen and some movies should be seen on it. When you go to the movies, you are happily trapped for about 2 hours. Zero to little distractions. When you watch the DVD, you are tempted to multitask. Once you do that, you're missing the best part of the movie.

I watch/watched way too many....... two reasons for me to start a series: 1) I'm a fan of the main star 2) interesting concept

Regularly
NCIS - I've watched JAG and loved it and when they introduced NCIS with Mark Harmon, they had me.
The BlackList
Blindspot
Arrow
The Flash
Supergirl
Legends of Tomorrow
The Librarians - loved the tv movies, so they had me from the start.
Rizzoli & Isles - too bad it already ended.

Probably missed some here.....

Occasionally
NCIS NOLA - may move fast to no longer watching as I don't like the Percy character and the new FBI chick. Big mistake to let Brody go....
NCIS LA - watched the first 4 seasons and since then only from time to time. Densi ruined this series IMO
MayGyver the Remake - I'll give it a try, not sold yet
Criminal Minds - the first 7, 8 seasons regularly; too many cast changes and the chemistry is off between the cast.
Criminal Minds Beyond Borders - when I'm bored
Elementary

Started on them during summer as I stumbled upon them
Warehouse 13 | Eureka

No longer watching
Vampire Diaries - stopped sometime in the second season; didn't try the spin-off
Revenge - the first two seasons, but then it went down pretty fast; still haven't seen the complete S4, just the finale. Cloak of silence, please?
Homeland - sorry after Damien Leweis quit, they should have ended it. Even Mandy Patinkin cannot save the series for me and I really like him as actor (he was great as Gideon on CM).

Cancelled series; watched them when they were running.

MacGyver - The original with RD Anderson | JAG - all 10 seasons | CSI Miami | House MD | Lie to me | The Mentalist | Forever | Numbers | Highlander | Highlander The Raven | Cold Case | Without a Trace | Gilmore Girls | Ghost Whisperer | Prison Break (after S2 it got bad......) | Pretender | Alf --- actually I could add a lot more shorter lived series as well.

Series I stopped during their run and I'm catching up on now (usually during summer when my regular series are on hiatus)
Stargate - I stopped early in the Ori arc as I've found it boring.
Stargate Atlantis - stopped sometime after Carter took over the command, she didn't fit IMO

Never was a big Star Trek fan, the only series I completely watched was Voyager. Several episodes of the original and TNG; DS9 never did it for me, and the prequel Enterprise with S. Bakula was just boring....

I do have the DVD set, two actually, normal and extended. I will watch it, but not right now. Still too annoyed about all the changes.

I know 1 to 1 is hard to do: Three Days of the Condor with Robert Redford comes to mind. Follows the book pretty close even if the book is called Six Days of the Condor; but both have the same break in logic and I re-watched that film several times.

I'm not a big fan of characters changing sex, race or sexual orientation. Next thing they'll do is make J. Jonah Jameson a trans- Black woman.:sneaky:

Nice to see another as passionate about LOTR as me, Jeanne :)

Still not going to watch them, Rob. My son who knows me very well said any tv I watched them on would be in danger of having a brick thrown through it. And there'd be a lot of swearing and screaming. So I'll stick with the books.

Oh, see, I liked the LOTR movies, especially the last one, but the books were better, which is the norm for movies made from books. Some are better at the transition, and some are really bad at it.

Tom Cruise's new movie Jack Reacher, Never Go Back, debuts this Friday, and I'm hesitant to go see it. I've read all of Lee Child's Jack Reacher books, and Tom Cruise, as good an actor as he is, doesn't visually/physically meet the mental image of what Jack Reacher looks like I've built up over the years reading the books.

It's also the 18th book in the series, so how do you learn all there is about the character when you start with one of the latest books, and don't film some of the earlier books so viewers can get to know him. I'm not saying there should be 17 other movies, but 2 or 3 to "set up the storyline", as it were, would be so much better.

I'm most probably starting to rant as well.....

I'm currently at Reacher #3 - Tripwire. Actually it was the first movie with Cruise that brought me to the books. Now while he is miscast lookwise if we go after the book, I can understand why he was chosen b/c he has a rep for action movies (the MI series and he's good as Ethan Hunt) plus he's certainly a box office draw. There aren't so many actors around who are an optical match to Reacher. Chris Hemsworth comes to mind, after that I'm having trouble. Maybe Hugh Jackman, though with muscles he's too much Wolverine. Also they wanted a big name to star and hopefully turn it into a series, so said star needed to commit. Jackman wants to stop as Wolverine, so I doubt he wants to start another movie series.

It's the same with Sandford's Lucas Davenport. Now I like Mark Harmon, but lookwise he's not exactly a match for Davenport. Certain Prey - the tv movie was nice, though it should have been a bit longer. It also had some minor changes, which I could live with (b/c people would think of it as reference to NCIS if they don't know the book; they turned it to a ref of Harmon's father).

But usually a lot of actors don't match their books counterpart - see James Bond. Timothy Dalton is for me the worst Bond ever movie-wise; if I go by the books, he's perfect!

It's the same with Sandford's Lucas Davenport. Now I like Mark Harmon, but lookwise he's not exactly a match for Davenport. Certain Prey - the tv movie was nice, though it should have been a bit longer. True, it's hard to find an exact match, but I think of Reacher as being over 6 foot, built like a football player, AND light brown, or sandy, blonde hair. Tom Cruise doesn't come close to any of that.

Also, from the trailers I've been seeing on TV, I suspect they aren't keeping to the reason he winds up doing what he does with each story, but I could be wrong, as trailers are only quick action shots, and don't ever include "story" shots, so it will be interesting to see.

As for Certain Prey, I started reading Sanford's books because of Certain Prey, but I mean the book, not the TV movie. I purposely picked up the book and read it before the TV movie aired, and I'm glad I did, because I didn't like the TV movie. At. All. Maybe if they had found another actor to star in it, and made it a full-length movie for the theaters, but as a 2 part TV movie, it failed.

I think Mark Harmon was the executive director, so that's why he wound up starring in it. I thought they dumbed it down, and a lot of the narrative in the book that explains the characters is always left out, so one line in the movie should've been cut as well, because anyone who hadn't read the book, would've wondered why it was said. They also showed scenes in the wrong order, and that really ticked me off. Only good thing is, I became a Sanford fan, and went back to the beginning, and read all the books in the series. I may still have maybe 1 or 2 to catch up on. Sanford also has another series I like reading as well, though it's related to the Davenport series, as some of the characters are in both.

If 17 Academy awards still makes you wary of playing Brick Brick with your Flat Screen. Nuff said. Flat screens are expensive and if you strain your arm throwing that brick, I'll get the blame! :D

Tom Cruise had that pretty boy syndrome going on that made him a turn-off with some male viewers after Top Gun. Now that Tom has gained a few years, he brings credibility to his characters. Would I have cast him as Lestat? No. But if you haven't seen Edge of Tomorrow, you are cheating yourself. Lately, from Jack Reacher to Oblivion to Edge of Tomorrow, Tom has made nothing but GREAT movies. Not good ones. Great ones. I haven't read the Jack Reacher books but I could sit down with one after seeing those movies.

My TV watching list.
Game of Thrones (currently in production)
NFL Football
Supergirl (Crush time! She is so adorable!!!)

Regarding Robert Redford. Before I say that 3 Days of the Condor rocked and was very unexpected as was his appearance in Captain America : The Winter Soldier I need Jeannie to come clean.

Are you...Are you related to Mark Harmon? If so, is he as cool as he seems on-screen?

It's okay to come clean. I've already discovered one princess here at the hive!

Gotta agree. I may be gay but I don't want a hero to all of a sudden become gay unless there was a reason for it. But this nonsense of changing sexes. I still refuse to buy Miss Marvel because she's the female version of Captain Marvel. I know he was killed off via cancer but still... who stays dead in comics or cartoons? No one that's who so they kept some female version around and Mar-vel is still languishing in limbo. I hate that. They really mess things up in the movies. Queen of the Damned was one example. They had most of the characters doing stuff they shouldn't. Killed off some that are still "living" in Anne Rice's books..... it's just amazing to me how much free license these idiots take with well written characters.

Was watching the premiere episode of Supergirl last week. Cat Grant had promoted Kara (Supergirl) at the end of the show last season, so Cat had to get a new assistant. The girl's last name was Tessmacher. I had a laugh from this easter egg from the movie that starred Gene Hackman, with Cat angrily shouting out Gene's line, "MISS TESSMACHER!":sneaky:

That's why I said Chris Hemsworth: he comes close lookwise; has the height, the hair color, may need to gain some muscle.
Tom Cruise certainly doesn't have the look of Reacher, but the author Lee Child is happy with Cruise as Reacher. Cruise has the presence for Reacher.

Hugh Jackman was actually considered for that role before Cruise was casted. Same for Brad Pitt, Vince Vaughn, Jamie Foxx and Will Smith. if I look at this list, sorry if they couldn't get Jackman then Cruise is indeed the better choice. I can't see Pitt in that role and the other 3, especially Foxx and Smith, would be a major miscast.

Like I said, watched the movie first and then got to the books; going by release date, so Sniper on which the first film is loosely based, is still in my future.

As for Certain Prey, I started reading Sanford's books because of Certain Prey, but I mean the book, not the TV movie. I purposely picked up the book and read it before the TV movie aired, and I'm glad I did, because I didn't like the TV movie. At. All. I had no high expectations of a tv movie, b/c they already screwed up with Mind Prey where Eriq LaSalle played Davenport. That was a big failure; main character changed race - total no-go! Too many details in there were wrong.

Now Certain Prey: let's see - the movie was shot in 20 days during Mark's summer NCIS hiatus and also his vacation/family time. So they were on a pretty tight schedule. Mark is one of the execs, b/c he's also a fan of the books and read them.

The book itself is actually a good start, since #13 Mortal Prey continues the Rinker story (and I would love to get that sequel again with Mark; actually w/o NCIS I could see him doing 2 - 4 of them a year similar to Tom Sellecks Jesse Stone, based on Robert B. Parker's book series.)
I already said, Mark is lookwise not exactly a match; maybe if it were one of the later books were Lucas is older, it would be a better fit. So what's important about Lucas: he's white, tall, blue eyes, womanizer, intelligent, very rich, a bit violent (especially in younger years), former gamer, always in law enforcement. They even have given Mark the face scar.
What annoyed me: the reducing of -at that time in the books timeline- supporting friends/colleagues like Sloan into nothingness. The Marcy Sherrill character was badly cast, so was Carmel. Blame USA Network and their choice in casting directors.
Even with scenes in the wrong order, one could follow the storyline - besides you wouldn't know if you haven't read the book.
All in all, comparing both movies, Certain Prey got a lot more right than wrong. But there's also room for improvement, mainly make it a two parter and get the supporting cast right or as close to as possible. I have faith in Mark's acting skills to pull off Lucas.

The author, Sandford, had no say in anything as the rights were sold long before.
-------
I really love the Prey Series and have them as real books although in 2 languages while the ebooks are all in English. I guess you're talking about that damn Flowers. He's one of the new supporting friends/colleagues and has gotten his own series some years ago. I admit I've only read two of the books as I don't find him that entertaining compared to Lucas. But I have the whole Flowers series as ebooks as well as the whole Kidd series who sometimes appears along Davenport when it comes to hacking. In one of the books in the twenties, there's a big story where he's featured alongside his wife.

Prey is usually my first summer read each year. I've also re-read some of them last year. I loved Buried Prey where we got flashbacks on a very young Lucas and his first days as detective plus that he solved that case years later. Already exited for US Marshal Davenport in Golden Prey.

Haven't seen either Oblivion or Edge of Tomorrow yet. I'm a bit behind. But I've read the critics and they're indeed good.
Started on the Reacher books and while lookwise Cruise is not a match, he has the presence for Reacher IMO.

My TV watching list.
Game of Thrones (currently in production)
NFL Football
Supergirl (Crush time! She is so adorable!!!)
GoT is overrated in my opinion and I stopped watching in S1; sorry couldn't get into it. Not even for the dragons....
Watch Supergirl as well, though I'm behind on the current seasons since my DSL is not working since Oct 3 and my ISP resp the technicians from another company responsible for the lines are downright incompetent. But hey I do love my comic series and movies. Ieven made a decent Melissa Benoist SG picture.

Regarding Robert Redford. Before I say that 3 Days of the Condor rocked and was very unexpected as was his appearance in Captain America : The Winter Soldier I need Jeannie to come clean.

Come clean yourself: who's the princess? ;)

No, I'm not related to Mark. And while there are several actors in my circle, Mark is very elusive and a very private person. But some of them know him personally and describe him as big prankster, real Mensch, great to work with. And no, he's not Gibbs even if they have some things in common, but Mark is more approachable.

I think you're right about the amount of Black Super Heroines in comics. I can only think of one and she decided NOT to join the Xmen. I can't think of any from DC.

Who are you thinking of? One of the big things that won me over to the X-Men back when I was an avid comic reader is that in a story line from the 80s I thin, Storm lost her powers, and still beat out Cyclops to become leader of the X-Men. And she was from Africa, so I'd say she qualified as black.

Strangely enough, The Black Widow in the Avengers movie is played by Scarlett Johannsen!

The Black Widow was always a Russian spy. I would say any problems there have more to do with the notion that a strong woman is a man-eater than anything racial.

Oh, see, I liked the LOTR movies, especially the last one, but the books were better, which is the norm for movies made from books. Some are better at the transition, and some are really bad at it.

Here's what I think about those sort of movies conversions. I had read the Hobbit and LOTR long long before the movies. Similarly I had read the first the books of A Song Of Ice and Fire long before Game of Thrones came out. In both cases, although changes were made that I didn't always like, I found that watching the movies helped me pick up on things that I over looked in the books because they were so deep and complicated. Characters that got left out of the show movie, would jump out at me when I'd go back and read the books, and I'd have a new appreciation for them because it would make me thing about their place. Also I can think of a couple cases where there are moments that they way they are written, it's easy to read over them quickly, and they don't fully sink in, but having an actor play them, can bring them a different level of meaning. So despite all the changes, I think the LOTR helped me find a lot of things I had missed in the books, and similarly with GoT.

Hi Gadget. How did I forget about Storm! One of my favorite X-Men and played in the movies by Halle Berry. She needs no introduction. The one I was thinking of was Dr. Cecelia Reyes. She joined briefly then quit. For those who don't want to follow the link, here she is.

Of course the Black Widow was always a russian spy and a man eater. Let me be clear. Stan Lee was introducing Black Heroes before any other major group. If you were black, you welcomed the chance to exist. If you watched Television, Black People didn't exist until the Twilight Zone (God Bless Rod Sterling). Growing up, in Television, it seemed the connotation that anything Black had to be evil or underhanded which is of course ridiculous. Again, Stan Lee cast against this with the Black Panther and the character Black Bolt and Emma, the White Queen (who used to be bad. Very bad). With respect to my earlier statement, Stan replaced the term evil with Cool. While Hollywood replaced Nick Fury with Samuel Jackson, the original WWII group had a Gabriel Jones. Stan integrated the United States Army before the Real United States Army was integrated! End of Rant. Forgive my digression.

As to who the princess is, by her own words She is a princess in hiding so I won't reveal her identity without permission. However, she is monitoring this very thread and is active in the Hive. A little detective work would see you through this mystery.

Jeanie, thank you for that info about Mark Harmon. It's always good to know that stars you like are really regular people and great to work with. You know, being a private person is rather relative. I've visited Hollywood many times. It's less than an hour's drive from where I live. I've seen a few stars out and about. People may wave but they were never swamped for an autograph. It's more like, 'Huh, It's Tom Cruise. Cool. Where do we eat?" That may have changed in the age of selfies. I hope you catch up with the new series. Supergirl is just the best and Melissa Benoist is so likeable in the title role. I won't mention anything else about the series until you get your DSL fixed.

Mark is guarding his private life like very few celebs. So, it is indeed a wonder that he finally created Twitter and Instagram accounts, though both aren't officially verfied yet (takes a while). But Pauley confirmed it on her Insta account.
I think it's some kind of unwritten law in LA: see a celebrity, especially if accompanied by spouse and kids, leave them alone. Though there are a few candids of Mark on the move in Santa Monica and on some he looks really pissed off.
I don't mind if you mention SG. I read the reviews (on Tvfanatic) usually the day after, regardless if I've seen the episode or not. Goes for all of my series.....

PS: I've uploaded my SG melissa pic to my gallery.....

Fact: the First Black tv sitcom was the Amos and Andy show back in 1951. It was taken off the air because the NAACP complained that it was racially stereotyping. The next TV sitcom for Blacks was Julia with Diahann Caroll.
