The Anchorage, Part 3

Lorraine

The Wicked Witch of the North
Last day ashore, back home tomorrow, woohoo!! But today's efforts may have taken me into 'crazy lady up the river' territory. All I wanted was a few herbs...

You bad boy! That's tomatoes, chilli pepper, lettuce (called Drunken Woman...I had to buy them!), basil, parsley, parcel, dill, sage, thyme, garlic and common chives, and chard. Still to get some rosemary. Should keep me in salads for a while :)

I started off thinking I'd have a picking lettuce, a basil, and a parsley which I would grow under the window in the boat. But it grew like Topsy and now I have a garden!!

Oh dear. Spuds are so easy to grow! I've grown them in a deep bucket. Put about three or four inches of potting mix in the bottom, put three sprouting potatoes on that, sprouts upward, and cover with a couple of inches of mix. As the green shoots and leaves come through, cover them almost up, and continue until the bucket is full. Make sure to water and feed them, and dig them out when the leaves start to yellow. You'll get a nice lot of yummy spuds from just those three. Nom! I've even done six in a big rubbish bin, same principle.

Sad face. Dave and Carole got their dates wrong and they don't get back for two more days, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah  Just as well I didn't do the vacuuming yesterday!!

Well, Grumble... grumble...
Relatively minor issue here. We've been having some problems with the heater for several years. It takes banging on it a good bit to get it going. We figured it was the thermostat and have replaced it twice in the last four or five years only to have the problem continue. So we figured it was the thermocouple. Had a heating pro in Friday and while the thermocouple did need to be cleaned (and was) the main problem is the thermostat. He's ordering us a pro grade one which will likely be in around the 23rd. In the meantime Jim has to manually jump the contacts and then remove the wire to get the heater to come on and go off. At least it's working.
Basically this is one situation where consumer grade stuff is a waste of money.

Morning all. Up early today because

Live: 7.5 magnitude earthquake strikes near Hanmer Springs in South Island, tsunami warning for many New Zealand coastal areas - National - NZ Herald News

Tsunami warning has been cancelled for Northland but further south they're still getting big swells and today is a king tide as well. Oh joy, oh rapture :(

Blimey! You have all the fun down there don't you young lady? All we've had is a low neap tide, mud and lot's and lot's of glorious English rain! Stay safe!:balloon03:

Gosh. The excitement never ends!

We had a little windstorm in the Pacific Northwest back in '62. Some people may have heard of it referred to as the Columbus Day Storm of 1962. It's actually a contender for the title of most powerful extratropical cyclone recorded in the U.S. in the 20th century. In the Eugene/Springfield area, where I lived, our lowest peak gust was 86 miles per hour (138 km/h). Which was higher than the max peak gust recording between 1948 and 2010. Most trees lost branches ... if not the whole tree, and timber losses exceeded the annual timber harvest for Oregon and Washington at the time. Given timber has always been one of the most important industries in both Oregon and Washington ... that was a lot of timber lost. I can't even comprehend the numbers (11,000,000,000 board feet (26,000,000 m3) to 15,000,000,000 board feet). Is that billions?

But, what I remember most about the storm are the fishing boats that ended up miles inland on the Siuslaw River. So ... while not a tsunami, the effects were pretty much the same. Just spread out over a bit more hours.

We don't get cyclones here in NY, but we had a storm run through this neighborhood a couple/three years ago that brought down whole, very old large trees, one of which was right near the front entrance to my building. Luckily it went down on top of 3 or 4 cars, rather than toward the building itself. I don't want to think what kind of damage it would've done to the windows in the apartments that would've been in its fall line, if it had gone that way. ~shakes head~

Luckily we don't get much in the way of really heavy seas around here living in the bay, though we do get some fall-out from the various storms which stray over from the US. However, that said I do remember setting off in the car one morning on my way east to visit a friend the night after a big blow only to be baulked at the end of the street by a trawler which had found itself sitting in the middle of the Promenade road, still surrounded by a foot or so of water. I turned around and went back home and the trawler was eventually removed and placed on display at Fleetwood where it remains to this day!

Sans Souci is fine, went out today to check on her. Here's a few more links if you are interested.
I just got an email from a gal that used to be a member on my web designers/developers eList, and she lives in Wellington, which I don't think is anywhere near you. She said everything where she is isn't too bad, but I kept thinking of your boat, so I'm glad it's good.

BTW, where exactly are you located? I know you've mentioned it more than once, but I don't want to have to scan the 185 pages of this thread to find it.
