It was a stroke, his neck arteries are nearly 100% clogged, one on the side and one at the base of his skull.
He spent the night in the hospital but he is home now.

They wanted him to go immediately to a cardiologist to set up surgery to unclog his neck arteries.
But first he had to go back to his primary to get a referral.
His primary is retiring at the end of this month so he is switching him to another doctor who is a specialist as well.
He said Paul can not stand a full surgery so he thinks just having stints put in will be best at this time.
There is already a bit of brain damage due to other mini-strokes and his heart is too weak for more surgery.

All we can do is hope that getting stints help a bit but we know he is close to a major stroke.

Geeze, I hope the stints help a lot. I know my Cardiologist has someone on staff who checks my carotid arteries every year. So far I've never gone over 16% blockage in all the years she's been checking it. Then again, my Atorvastatin (formerly Lipitor) helps with that. I had my cholesterol under control by myself a few years ago, and my Internist thought I could stop taking it, but my Cardiologist said I shouldn't, because it will help keep the carotids from getting fully clogged, and so far he's been right.

Of course, that works for me. Not everyone's the same when it comes to usefulness of medication.

Update about my brother.
He went to his new primary yesterday, who is also a cardiologist, and got checked over good.
This doctor said what happened was not a stroke which would have affected one side not the whole body.
Turns out it was because his BP has been dropping way too low and not coming back up.
This time it dropped so low he was in a non=responsive state and near death.
The problem was due to blood pressure lowering meds because he has had high BP so often.
It should have been stopped as soon as his BP started getting too low for so long.
He has been off it for over a week now and his BP is normal and he is gaining more strength.
I am so happy to hear he is doing so much better now.
They will not be doing any surgery or inserting any stints in the neck, he has been through so many and they won't help.

Now if the have that power outage fixed at the place I need to go I will be seeing a cardiologist soon.
Over the last three years I've had several Xrays, cardiogram, sonogram of the heart and stress tests...I am tired of it.
We know there is a hole in my heart and my cholesterol is 375 but the insurance company insists on more tests before giving me the okay on the new medicine.
Maybe they hope to hold off till that law our government wants to pass on health care gets through.
Then people like me with pre-existing conditions won't be covered.

I am beginning to think our government is run by total fools!

Glad to hear your brother didn't have a stroke. Years ago I worked with a gal who's blood pressure was always a little low, and I remember going shopping with her during lunch one day, and we were standing at the checkout line when she grabbed my arm and said she was about to faint.

Every one who worked there got nervous when she nearly collapsed (the manager got her a chair real quick), but I told them her BP is usually a bit low. The manager got her a small glass of sherry, and she perked right up. Needless to say, her condition wasn't as bad as your brother's seems to be, but checking the meds to see what he can take, perhaps a lower dosage might just do the trick.

As for stress tests and such, I take a full set of them once a year, and so far (knocks wood), I pass with flying colors every year, but at our age, you never know when that'll change, so even though It's a 4-5 hour stint at the Cardiologist's office, I'd rather that than having to wonder how I'm doing.

BTW, don't you take some kind of cholesterol medication? Mine's usually less than half what yours is, but I take a low dose cholesterol medication to keep it in check.

I am allergic to statins and the other kind.
The doctor wants me on one that is a shot every two weeks and has no alergic reactions or side effects.
He said it lowers it quickly but is 400.00 a shot.

OUCH!!! That's expensive for sure, but considering most folks just take Statins of one type or another, this is costly because it's not generic yet, and may never be.

I just realized, even if the shots lower it quickly, you would probably have to stay on it long term to keep it lower. I don't envy you that.

It may come down to the cardiologist having to find something else.
My co-pay would be $200.00 a month and now with higher rent, that is out of the question.

And since the arteries in my chest are heavily clogged I may have to go for stints or whatever they are called.
My immune system just refuses to let me take most meds and triggers hives...sigh.

I misheard on that price...it would be 1600.00 a month and my co=pay would more than likely be 800.00 a month.
So that is out of the question for me.

Glad to hear that your brother's problem was not as serious as it looked and is on the mend. I hope it continues.

I too have a hole in the heart but apparently I was born with it and I have been advised it would only be an issue if I had heart surgery as if could be a site for infection. I was surprised to find out how common this condition appears to be as figures suggest about 10% of the population here in the UK have the condition. The only real restriction I am aware of is that your are not allowed to go diving, as I can't swim that is probably as blessing in my case.

I hope the come up with a plan to get it sorted for you and soon.

Extraordinary
Somehow a "like" doesn't seem appropriate. I will be following this thread as my thoughts are with you and yours. I know how I feel about my two siblings and it rends my heart to hear of any other's siblings health problems.

Hornet, you are amazing. Stay out of the pool and keep rendering.

Well, yesterday was a great day.
Pete, the older brother who is living down in De Soto, MO and, Paul, the brother who now lives in Hermann, MO came to visit.
Paul's daughter and her hubby brought them over.
Paul is the one I used to share a home with and was care giver to for a bit.
Since his doctors took him off the blood pressure meds (that lowered his bp) he is doing so much better.

My daughter spent the whole morning preparing a delicious meal for us all and banana pudding too.
It was really great to get together again.

Then today I had to go give a couple of tubes of blood for the vampires.
Well, not really for vampire but to check how much higher my cholesterol is since March when it was 375.
Turns out diet and exercise will not lower it and I am allergic to statins and stuff like Lipitor.
My body makes the extra cholesterol on it's own so all this low fat, low cholesterol diet does no good.
I keep telling the doctors my body is crazy.
