Liking/loving one set of figures doesn't mean that has to be the only figure that you use. Figures are like any tool in an artist's repertoire you use the best one for the job you are doing.

I'm the same way, Pen. Genesis 1 is definitely my primary figure to render with. But I still use my Gen3's, sometimes even my Gen2's. Dawn, Dusk, and Luna see use from time to time, as well. They would probably see more use if there was more of the kinds of items I needed for them, but they are starting to appear here and there in spots in my artwork. :)

I use whatever figures I know I can get the right appearance to my characters on. Nataani is one of mine. Dusk just took to his features much more closely to what I had in my head for how he should look. I actually tried to build on him Genesis 1, the G2M and the G3M... then on a whim I tested him out on M4 and M3. Nope, it just didn't look like Nataani to me. Dusk however, suited his shape very nicely once I got my hands on that head resource kit from Chris.

Figures, props, shaders, they're all tools. I use the HW figures for some stuff, I use the Daz figures for others. I love the look of a lot of the toon figures - they are just adorable!! But I don't render toons, so I don't buy them. I like looking at the stuff other folks make with them, though. ;)

@paganeagle2001 You said it so much better than I could have. Hats off. Very well stated and eloquently written. Thank you.

I think if you download EZSkin3 you should be able to use the figure definitions. I know EZSkin3 will use the EZSkin2 definitions, which are just lists of material zones, so you could probably go the other way. There's Dawn preset for EZSkin3 which can also be used for Dusk. You can also make your own customer definitions, but this would probably be easier.

Unfortunately definitions created for EZSkin 3 cannot be used by EZSkin 2. The file format had to change in order to accommodate new features.

However, it is not difficult to create your own definitions and share them with the community.

I'd be very happy to write a short tutorial if it would help? I would, however, ask a small favour in return: the user guide was supposed to explain how to this so it might need improving. If you would be so kind as to check the user guide first and let me know which bits are not clear, then that would be a great help to me. You get a tutorial published here, I get some valuable feedback on how to make the user guide better - that's got to be good for all of us! :)

Oh, absolutely Pen. And I didn't mean to imply people can only love or use one figure and not multiple figures. Some people have a harder time than others letting go of the mindset that if you don't look like me, and don't act like me, and don't think like me, then you are a threat and need to be treated like an enemy. Just as that type of thinking is encouraged or accepted in some countries or some parts of a country (like the US), some forums also seem to encourage or accept it ... or they don't seem to do enough to discourage it.

There are definitely things I liked about Genesis, like one figure that could be male or female, adult or child, human or creature, or any combination of those. Had Genesis worked natively in Poser, I would have embraced it.

While DS has some features I like, Poser has more, and those features are more important to me than the DS features that appeal to me. Perhaps even more importantly, the UI in Poser works for me, while the DS UI fights me every step of the way. Dawn, Dusk, Baby Luna, and Harry work beautifully for me. I don't feel limited by using just the HiveWire figures because I'm able to get any character I want by using them. I'm not at all willing to put up with the shortcomings of the Gen 4 figures, and not only is Genesis not native to Poser, I find it entirely too expensive. 15 to 20 years ago, supporting a dozen different figures wouldn't have been an issue, but it's a big issue now after half a dozen years of salary freezes working at a not for profit company.

But, I don't think other people should only use the HiveWire figures if they feel doing so limits their creativity!

I think it's great some people are able to move from DS to Poser ... with little effort. Way back in the DS 2.something and Poser 5 days, they were both so new to me it wasn't all that difficult to switch between the two programs. Then it was all about the figure for me, and DAZ figures worked the same in both DS and Poser. Since I never bought any of the DS add-ons, I started discovering DS wasn't as robust as Poser. As DS changed and became more complex, it required far more effort than I was willing to put into it. It was more effective for me to spent that time learning Poser. Who knows ... perhaps if the DS UI ever becomes as flexible for me as the Poser UI, and I have an excess of hours every day, I might decide to spend time becoming as proficient with DS as I am with Poser.

But ... that will have to wait until I retire. I'm constantly having to learn new things at work or doing things that don't come naturally to me ... AT ALL! I am SO not an accountant type person OR a statistician, and yet I spent hours every week in those roles.

Well now. Look at that. It's 6:30 am, and I've spent the night trying to catch up on the forum. Though, I did have a rather long nap earlier in the evening.

Carrara is also a landscape generator and is capable of creating very deep and detailed environments populated with trees, clouds, skies, fog, flame and just about anything else you can think of.

I depend on Carrara to modify models. I happen to like the interface...has similarities to Poser. Hexagon and Argile in navigation and UI, Here's a screenshot.

Thanks guys. It sounds like it has some really good tools. It's too bad Daz seems to have it tucked away.

Where else do you get as many WIP threads? I love seeing things come to life. Look back at how the HW3D animals came from the same mesh as Dawn. I want to see more WIP's, I want to see more people asking for beta testers for their products, both free and in the store. This is how a community grows, it finds something new and runs with it, shares the excitement and shows what they can do with it.

So this is I think a really neat thing about this community. I don't think I've seen dedicated forums for this sort of thing elsewhere. Actually I should say, I know I didn't see them, it just doesn't mean they didn't exist

This is great for people getting started, so that they can see that even the people who have been doing this for a long time don't start with things perfect.

That's actually one of the things I love about this place. One of the many things. ;) I know for myself, I create WIP threads because when I was first learning 3D, I learned a LOT just by watching others' progress through. I didn't speak up much on a forum back then, but if there was a thread like this that I was watching, I'd sub myself to the thread and read every piece that got posted, even if I spoke a word on the thread. :)

Also because I think when the community watches a product come together, they're more invested in it... they also have the chance to offer input and, frankly, they can alter the direction a product takes... it becomes *everyone's* product, not just the vendor's... which I also really enjoy seeing...

Hello, Snarly.

This is a very generous offer. A tutorial would be absolutely wonderful to have, especially for someone who's having to re-acquaint herself with the insides of Poser again after several years of staying inside of DS. :)

I did read through the documentation myself, and there were a few things that left me going "huh?" I will break the user guide open again and get you specific page/paragraph notations. I can't do it today as I'm still trying to fix a couple of texture maps. But once I have the maps fixed, I'll post something in written form that you can look at - probably over in our Software/Poser sub-forum.

Letting Carrara languish is a real shame to me. These days I use Vue for my landscapes and, if you are using figures, having the ability to use Poser materials is a real plus. The downside it is another program you have to learn whereas Carrara had a lot of similarities to Poser and was, in my view, was easier to get to grips with. The fact it has been basically abandoned suggests that it is not being developed because it would be competition, otherwise it could be sold so another company could develop it.

I know taking over a competitor just to kill it is a well practiced business strategy but the end result is customers tend to lose out.

I, too, would welcome a tutorial Snarly, and I will also peruse the user guide to see what, if anything, isn't clear. ;)

I too, needed a tutorial or a more clear (bad grammar!??!) user guide...and I am SO GRATEFUL for both Miss B and Seliah offering to write something up, because typing a lot hurts my hands, and with my dyslexic brain, I'm never sure if it's just ME not getting in within my neurons!

I have removed my original thoughts and will not place any more comments about EZskin as I don't want to insult people. Others will give better feedback I'm sure.

I will move on to other things.

All the best.

Hey, Snarly :)
There's a thread about your great script over here:

Scripts - Poser | HiveWire 3D Community

Or of you'd like to start another thread in that forum for this input and a tute, that would be great as well. That way people will find it and it won't be all tied up in the middle of this verrrrrry long thread :)

Thanks!

Removed as I don't know what I'm talking about.

That is a shame, I agreed with the first part in that it would not mean a lot to the beginner, unfortunately I was distracted before I managed to complete reading your post so I cannot comment on the rest. Perhaps there should be a basic overview and a technical section, much like the material room is setup.

I'm sure others with a better understanding of doing things than myself will contribute to this.

I never thought the things I did insulted the people reading it, so now I guess my writing tutorials etc is over. I feel a bit obsolete in this newer world of 3D.

So, I will keep my thoughts, renders, barely usable writings to parts of forums that are well away from these sections.

I'll be watching and no doubt seeing lots of things appearing over the years.

Personally, I'd rather skip past portions I already know in a tech manual or tutorial, than to fill in blank areas where it was assumed I knew things I didn't. Even when I am comfortable with the basics, I find I usually learn more when reading someone else's perspective.

I agree frogimus, and I'm sorry to see Richard has deleted his original remarks. Everyone has a way of learning that's unique to them, and there are some new members to the Hive who are also new to 3D graphics apps and plugins, and having a simple explanation so they can understand it is not an insult. If anything, it deserves kudos, because even though many of us have been there, and done that, there are many who haven't, and having a manual or user guide with terminology they don't understand isn't, in my opinion, a good thing.

I agree, Miss B. If breaking a tutorial or helpful comment into simple terms is insulting, I am a monkey's aunt. I myself need difficult to me concepts explained to me in simple language or my brain goes to sleep.

Probably making myself seem dumb, but I tried to use ezskin 3 on dusk. People just say use the Dawn preset and I get that but how? I have studied the User Guide and I don't really understand how to make presets transfer to another figure or even how to transfer parts to my own presets. I know it is me because a lot of people just have no problem but I just don't get it.

You didn't...I've just got a bit of a bugbear at the moment about it as so many people seem to think you need to follow just one figure.

Richard that would be a real shame as you have written some very useful tutorials. I missed seeing what you posted but I'm sure that it would have been useful to me when I start setting up Diva in Poser. I'm such a noob in Poser and it confuses me terribly.
