Oh...another Carrara user :) That makes three of us so far...

So I'm curious, because DAZ's site is not very clear on this, what is it that Carrara does as apposed to Studio? Also, interesting enough the pro version seems to be half the cost of the regular version. I haven't really seen a clear description of the software or it's features.

If Dawn SR1 is to be given away via computer mags, please note that here in the UK, they don't do it on cd's\dvd's any more, they do it via downloads.

Normally you have to buy the magazine as when you go to download (after you become a member of the site) you are normally asked a random question about a line of text in the magazine.

The two main ones that are known for it in the UK are:-

3D World

3D World | Creative Bloq

3D Artist

3D Artist

These are the two magazines that I get. In fact I doubt there are any other mags like this in the UK now.

So, you will need to get in touch with them, possibly with a write up about HW3D, how it came about, about it's products etc. Then add in the Dawn SR1 free model with some content etc.

Just a thought.

Carrara is an interesting piece of software. It's a full featured 3D program with a very easy to use and powerful shader room as well as 3D paint capability. It is a competent modeller with rigging capabilities. It's render engine is also quite decent and fast although is does have access to Luxrender through a plugin called Luxus(?). I believe there is an Octane Render plugin as well. There are many plugins available that increase Carrara's abilities. I own most of them. Carrara is also a landscape generator and is capable of creating very deep and detailed environments populated with trees, clouds, skies, fog, flame and just about anything else you can think of. The selling point for me (I started with Carrara 5) is its ability to use Poser content natively. I wanted something more that Poser for my content and Carrara fit the bill perfectly.

While DAZ is not actively maintaining Carrara, with the various plugins and a fairly dedicated community Carrara is fine piece of creative software.

I had Carrara 8 installed at one a point, and for me Carrara renders better outdoor scenes that DS does, especially those involving water, like lakes, rivers, oceans and the like.

The one thing I couldn't wrap my brain around was their shader system. I was too used to the DS Surfaces Tab, and Poser's Material Room. Carrara is a whole 'nother story, and I just couldn't get used to it, so I used it to render some Carrara scene products I purchased, and uninstalled it. That's NOT to say I have anything against Carrara, because if I was just going to use it to buy products and render, it's a great app, but for someone who likes to tweak and tinker and set up my own scenes, I just can't get the hang of it, so it wasn't worth it to me to keep it installed.

For now, I'll just stick with Bryce.

GG, some people use it as an advanced rendering tool...it's compatible with DAZ models, Carrara 8.5 Pro will do FBX import as well as other popular formats, and it's a modeler and animator. I depend on Carrara to modify models. I happen to like the interface...has similarities to Poser. Hexagon and Argile in navigation and UI, Here's a screenshot.

I used to buy both of these magazines years ago in our local Barnes & Noble store. Of course, we would get each issue about a month later, but still they were worth it.

I don't know about studio as I don't use it but I did find that Carrara was a lot better with plants than Poser was and could use all the Poser content. Lights were easier as well and I think the the render was better than Poser at that time. Problem was that Poser continue to improve while Carrara was largely abandoned.

Here is a Carrara render from 2011

So, Poser and Studio people are like oil and water and so don't mix?

I doubt that statement, especially after being here for X amount of years.

There are times when people don't get along due to this or that, but in the end, it's just people opinions, and we all know how much that means.

Because X says something, it does not mean that Y is automatically wrong because they don't use Z software.

Some of us have reasons not to like certain companies, but it does not mean we do not like the people that use those companies software.

Software is just a tool we use to make our art, products or whatever.

Perhaps we should concentrate on the things we enjoy doing, than those things that slightly annoy us.

I have had more than my flame wars over years, I have my battle scars from being in the front of those battles and now...... I let others do that fighting as it no longer gets to me as much as it used to.

"Oh a figure is only available for this software, it should be for my software as well!" Sorry, but I can't be bothered. I'm happy that the artist decided to bring some enjoyment to others. If it is to come for that other software then it will. Until then.... Why get upset about something you have absolutely no control about. You can rant and rave, or put that energy into something that will benefit yourself and others.

"My software is better than yours!" Is it? Good for you, I'm happy you think so, but allow me to use what I want as I will allow you to do the same.

Look through this site, and see that X and Y software users CAN get on together. They CAN help one another with conversions and hints. The can have discussions about this or that without having threads locked etc.

I don't know why it works here and doesn't on other sites, but I do know I hardly post anywhere else now and I think it is down to the people here knowing that they have a voice and they are individual people, not just a credit card to buy products.

Where else do you get as many WIP threads? I love seeing things come to life. Look back at how the HW3D animals came from the same mesh as Dawn. I want to see more WIP's, I want to see more people asking for beta testers for their products, both free and in the store. This is how a community grows, it finds something new and runs with it, shares the excitement and shows what they can do with it.

Other sites may be more draconian and then you will see that community start to turn on itself, looking for any little thing to jump on and complain about.

I'm glad to say, I as a person are no longer a part of those forum communities and I like being here, where I can post my renders, ask questions and occasionally do stupid things like writing long posts like this.

All the best.

A lot of it has to do with the way the forums are run. The whole ethos here is cooperation and there is a genuine interest in art, which is great because I am interested to see what others are producing art wise and what they are using to do it. I remember in the old forum here that someone criticised the non-adult/family nature of the whole of Hivewire3D. Someone responded with a detailed and respectful explanation of why that was the case. The person in question was having none of it and, I felt, was becoming aggressive with their attitude this was met with a respectful suggestion that perhaps Hivewire was not the right forum for them. Problem solved.

That is one of the reasons I am saddened by takeover of RDNA. The forums were run well and fairly. The threads were allowed to drift, but only so far before you were asked politely to stay on track. Personal attacks got a very quick response and on the whole it worked well. It was often interesting to see threads with the same title at RDNA and another forum, many in the other forum ran for page after page in outright war and they were finally locked. The RDNA thread never became a war and, as a lot of the members were the same (even if they did use different names) you have to suspect it was the timing and fairness of the moderators that was the main difference.

I think the silliest post I ever saw was by someone who said although he had created a forum account here, he hadn't ever posted because ... his posts would just be pulled because he was a DAZ supporter. Or some such nonsense.

We have plenty of DAZ supporters here ... and DS supporters ,.. and Smith Micro supporters ... and Poser supporters as well as HiveWire supporters. We even have people here who love using the Genesis figures, or Gen 4 figures, or even some of the Poser figures. Of course, we also have people who totally rave about the HiveWire figures ... like me. And, we are all welcome here.

It's just trolls who aren't if they can't keep their trollish nature in check. If they can ... they are more than welcome here. At least ... mine were :D
Like, a few pages back or so. I think gremlins would even be welcome here. As long as they stayed away from water.

Perhaps, many of us took the phrase "What if we could start all over again?" to heart when we read it in the HiveWire introductory posts. Certainly, it struck a chord with me.

From the first minute I heard about Dawn and HiveWire, I was excited. Dawn was everything I hoped she would be. As was HiveWire.

@Satira, I love the Hivewire figures and I also love the Genesis and Genesis 3 figures. I also like Star and would gobble up Gnobbit in an instant if he was for DS. Liking/loving one set of figures doesn't mean that has to be the only figure that you use. Figures are like any tool in an artist's repertoire you use the best one for the job you are doing. Then again maybe...I'm just a victim of the oooh Shiny Syndrome I love new toys!

@Richard, well said...
