The Anchorage, Part 3

And I was wrong! The Galapagos is the furthest north. Good researching, Miss B :)

Edit: you can see that line I was talking about, then it shoots up the west coast of South America. Interesting...I wonder why.
Probably the current that runs along the coast would be my guess. Right temps and food supply.

I was over at Daz for the last one. Stomemason lives in Christchurch and literally at the foot of the hill the old ball tower is on. People were worried about him and when he finally showed back up he posted pics.
Poor people really didn't need another one.

Yes, we were all worried about him back then. IIRC, he lives right under that hill. I hope his house didn't take too much damage with this one.

I don't know how folks deal with earthquakes of that magnitude. The three I remember here in the past couple of decades were very mild compared to what they got.

Ugh, I really hope he's okay. :/ They did not need another one at all! We've only ever gotten very minor (3.0 range) ones here before, and they're usually very rare and spread rather far apart (as in years and years and years). The last one I remember us having in this area was a 2.6 and my daughter, who is currently 17, was only 2 years old at the time.

Yes, the 3 I remember were close to a decade apart. The last one was about 4 years ago, but I'm guessing as one of the neighbors I was friendly with at the time moved out about 3 years ago next month, but I don't recall how long before she moved that it occurred. I remember several of us were standing in the doorways to our apartments on the top floor (the strongest part of the building's framework), and talking loudly down the hall so we could all hear each other.

Another neighbor and her late husband were downstairs on the street in front of the building, and never felt a thing, so that tells you how light-weight that earthquake was.

It's kinda odd really, the whole Christchurch earthquake. For donkey's years, NZ had been and still is waiting for the monster quake in Wellington. Every single time I've been to Wellies there has been a quake. One tried to push me out of my lane on the motorway overpass, another woke me up and I decided I would never get out of the building before it collapsed (very old, three story, brick convent) so I rolled over and went back to sleep. All of the quakes I was in were in the news but apart from stock, books, ornaments etc falling from shelves, no damage. And then Christchurch gets the mid sized one and then the biggie, and Wellies is out of the news. But one day...

I wonder how much longer the "decay curve" from the 2010 and 2011 tremors will last??? Six years seems like a really long time to still be getting quakes from those earthquakes.

Oh my gosh! Guess six years isn't all that long for aftershocks after a massive earthquake. The New Madrid Seismic Zone/New Madrid Fault Line in the southern and midwestern United States and is still getting aftershocks from the 1811–12 New Madrid earthquakes. The December 16, 1811 earthquake was 7.5-7.9 and was followed by a 7.4 aftershock on the same day. The earthquakes were felt over 50,000 square miles. The 1906 San Francisco earthquake was "only" felt over 6,200 square miles.

The 1812 earthquakes were on January 23, 1812 (7.3 -7.6) and February 7, 1812 (7.5-8.0)

I had never heard of the New Madrid quakes. California hogs all the earthquake news in the US. Apparently, aftershocks on the San Andreas (California) are believed to top out at 10 years while earthquakes in New Madrid are considered aftershocks nearly 200 years after the 1812 New Madrid earthquake.

Hopefully, this latest Christchurch earthquake is near the end of the decay cycle.

200 years! Oh my actual, that is crazy!

The science geeks are saying this is part of the decay cycle so hopefully poor old CHCH will get a breather soon. They deserve it.

Yeah. I had no idea that aftershocks could continue for years after the initial quake.

Our poor planet just continues to have growing pains.

Good evening. :)
I suppose you've had a full pot of coffee by now, Lorraine?
As soon as my hair drys it's bed time. Can't go to bed with a bit of perfume that got on it from being within a few feet of someone wearing a lot of it this morning. I'll wake up with a sinus headache tomorrow.

Yep, had my bucket of coffee, Terre :)

Oh yuck, isn't that gross when people wear a lot of perfume?! I'm like you, it gives me bad sinus.

Sleep well
