Poor Fiji is going to be walloped for at least the next day by the cyclone we missed. Cyclone Winston has swung north east and intensified into a Cat 5 directly on top of the Fijian Islands. The island of Vavau in Tonga was hit too, fortunately with no lives lost. I don't think Fiji will be that lucky 
Schuylkill River has been running rather brown the last few days.
I was an hour late to work yesterday. A driver coming out of the city on Martin Luther King JR Drive crossed the yellow line and hit another car head on. Needless to say, MLK Drive was closed both ways at the scene of the accident, and traffic was pretty much stopped. The driver and 4 year old of the car that was hit were taken to the hospital, but appear to be ok. The driver of the car that caused the accident died in the collision. Posted speed is 35 mph, but no one (not even cops) drive less than 50 mph. MLK Drive runs between the river and the Schuylkill Expressway, and we're generally moving faster than the creeping traffic on the expressway.
Then about noon, a cab was rear-ended by a SEPTA bus (no surprise there ... considering neither SEPTA buses nor cabs obey traffic laws). So, the cab was "knocked" out of control and, his gas pedal got stuck ... resulting in the cab screaming across JFK Blvd, through the lighted intersection at 15 street (JFK is a major street with multiple lanes). An empty (except for the driver) school bus and an SUV were then involved in the accident, with all three vehicles crashing into a bank. Apparently, a Transit Police vehicle was also involved. Amazingly, no one was killed, considering the amount of cars, cabs, buses, and pedestrians that were in the area at the time! Seventeen people were taken to hospitals with minor injuries.
Hopefully, today will be a better day. But there has already been a tractor trailer accident this morning on I-95.

Fortunately, I was snug in my office when the bus accident happened. While I do go through JFK intersections, it's 17th and JFK on my way to work, and 16th and JFK on my way home. I only have to deal with the 15th and JFK intersection when there are street closures on 16th because of protests or street work (both of which happened over the last couple of months).
I have a really hard time understanding why the city closes any Center City street during the evening commute because of street work. You'd think they'd wait till after 6:30pm. Or heck ... do the work during the day. Once we're at work ... who cares if shoppers, cabs, and buses are inconvenienced :wink: No one should be coming into Center City during the work day unless they work here.
(Can you tell I'm not a shopper?)

Now ... online is a completely different story. I can spend hours on amazon browsing through all kinds of stuff. Of course, most things usually go into my cart and then saved for later ... or never

Fiji is getting a hammering as I type. One elderly gentleman has been killed when his house collapsed on him. They are going to have a long and very frightening night. The only good news is the eye has made landfall and now it is not feeding off the warm water temp, it should downgrade to a Cat 4 relatively quickly. It was an unexpected move on the cyclones part but everything it's done to date has been pretty unexpected. There is even a possibility it will loop back down for another go at NZ.
Ugh. That does NOT sound good at all, Lorraine! Poor Fiji. They get wailed on like this quite often, from what I understand.

This is actually the worst cyclone they've ever had. Vanuatu was pretty much demolished last year. The Pacific islands are not the place one wants to be during cyclone season which is the whole of summer. That's why cruisers come down here for the summer and head back up from April/May. The inhabitants of the islands have no choice but to ride them out and hope for the best. And the best ain't gonna be much in Fiji. Poor sods, they are in their homes right now with 300k winds and monsoon rain, in the dark.
300k winds?!? That's like 180+ mph???
