The Anchorage, Part 3

Lorraine

The Wicked Witch of the North
1 am and all is well. The night is warm and the wind has dropped to a gentle breeze, just enough to rock the dinghy and make little plopping noises. The crickets are leaving us alone, thanks to that breeze and I should have a peaceful night, rocked gently to sleep. Goodnight, sleep tight, hope the bedbugs don't bite :inverted:

Good afternoon, Terre and Miss B. Hope you have a swell Valentine's Day :balloon03:

Getting windier as the maybe cyclones track down. They are still maybe cyclones cos they could vear off or petter out and not make landing here. But we will still get wind and rain regardless, but not as much.

It was extremely windy here yesterday and last night, but I was just out for a quick trip to the supermarket, and even though the temp's still down in the teens/single digits, it's not nearly as windy now, so much easier to deal with.

That's good Miss B. The news from you are is quite frightening. When the mayor goes on tv begging peeps to stay indoors, you know it's really bad. Stay warm, stay safe

Brrr..... We have been having a mild winter overall even though they were projecting a cold one. I don't think the temps have gotten down to single digits much less to zero or below. One really severe storm doesn't make the whole winter harsh.

'Brrr' is right, Terre! Sounds like the north east (is that correct?) is getting a hammering. The temps being quoted are making my toenails curl

I remember a day last year when we had the same temps as each other, Terre. Can't remember if you were winter and I summer, or if it was vice versa, but we both had 20C/68F. Cracked me up!

And a super big YAY! No cyclones for us...woop, woop!

Some happy news on the most endangered NZ bird

Record number of Taiko born on Chatham Islands
Ohhh, what a furry little fuzz ball. :)

It sounds like their birthing rituals are similar to that of the penguins, where the males sit the eggs, and the females dive for food. Well in the Arctic I think, because the Antarctic region has too much ice. I know I saw a documentary years ago about it. It was really interesting to see how the females came back and knew exactly who their mates were. They all look the same to me. :D

Hmmmmmm are you sure? I know someone who lived in Nevada that have a couple, though not sure how they survived in that heat. Of course that was many years ago, so don't know if they still have them.

OK, I just looked it up in Wikipedia, and no they can live in other regions as well, even near the equator -->

Yep, that's right, Terre, no Arctic penguins. There must be a demarcation line for them in the Southern Ocean because they are in all the countries that are just above the Antarctic but go no further north. We have our fair share and I think the little Blue may be the furthest one north.

And I was wrong! The Galapagos is the furthest north. Good researching, Miss B :)

Edit: you can see that line I was talking about, then it shoots up the west coast of South America. Interesting...I wonder why.

Yep, stay safe Miss B...we've had a very mild summer so far this year with today only being mid twenties to 30...

@Lorraine, did your daughter enjoy the festival?

Yay for the High!

Slight correction there Miss B. Penguins are strictly Antarctic. ;)

We have fairy penguins...you can see them come up out of the water just near where my sister lives in Tas. She has all sorts of cool things come visiting though...she's seen whales and dolphins at the head of the river where it meets the beach.

Hey Pen! Haven't spoken to my daughter but the pics she posted tell of a very fun day for her and her pals. There's a gorgeous one of her sitting with a cute canine ball of fluff on her knee...so cute!

I think you guys might remember my telling you about our little blue penguins that I see around Opua. They are the very same breed as those Pen is telling you about but differently named. I do think fairy penguin is a cool name...little blue is a bit prosaic if you ask me. But no matter what their name they are so cute and sweet, they make you wanna pick 'em up and take them home :)

Glad she had a good time...it looked like fun on the news.

Yep...they come to Victoria too...especially around Phillip Island. I've mainly seen them when I visit my sister...

By the by...I'm glad the cyclone is going to miss you.
