The Shader Builder is where you would build a new shader. Something like playing around with all the nodes in Poser to create something new.

Not sure it's necessarily a Pro version item, as I was playing with it in DS 3 Advanced. Howe3ver, I don't recall there being anything like that in DS 2 or DS 3 Standard, so it's possible they now consider it a Pro version. I original got DS 4.0A, but then DAZ made it a freebie, so I automatically got all the updated plugins to make it a Pro version. DS 4.0A also had the Shader Builder.

I kept up with it until DS 3 Advanced, then started using Poser. DS 4 Pro being offered free happened during the interval.

I have no idea if the Shader Builder/Mixer is a Pro-only feature or not, to be honest.

Also to be very honest, that is one part of DS that I have yet to venture into. I am just starting to really learn and understand Ubersurface and SSS inside of DS. I have never tried, or needed to try yet, building my own shader from the ground up. Anything I've done thus far has just been building materials within already existing shader systems (such as SSS, Ubersurface, dzDefault, etc).

The only shader I ever did was creating shadows. There was a tut I think that Szark gave me a link to years ago. I wanted to NOT render the floor, but I wanted shadows from a Rim light to fall on the floor in front of the character so that when I added my background in postwork, it looked like she was standing on it.

Other than that, shaders are not my forte in DS or Poser, though I'm learning more in Poser these days. In DS I was able to tweak things, but that Shadows shader was the only one I was ever able to create, and then through a tutorial. I should PM him and ask him if he remembers where he found that. I remember it was fairly simple, as I got it right my first try.

This is one of the renders I did for a render challenge at RDNA a few years ago where I used the Shadow shader -->

I just got off the phone o_O Some days everybody I know tries to call at the same time...they have to get in line.

I like the soft shadows and lighting...would love to learn to control things like that, and not just depend on a happy accident to turn out right when rendering.

You and me both. Often it's just pot luck that something comes out as good as I want it. ;)

I don't know if you remember, but years ago there use to be a guy who taught painting on PBS named Bob Ross..and he often referred to "happy accidents", meaning it turned out kinda right without your knowing how you got there...haha. I have a lot of those in 3D work.

OMG!!! I thought I was the only person in the world that watched his shows regularly!!! I loved watching him paint.

His shows are what got me into the whole art thing in the first place... it was frustrating as hell for me, because I just could NEVER make my hands DO that. Never could. Still can't. But I sure spent most of my childhood trying!

He was really good. Mind you, I think I was watching his show as re-runs? I'm talking mid to late 80's for when I would have been watching it. Drove my elders nuts. They got so tired of hearing him in the background. LOL!

His episode called the Happy Accident...he always kept a cool approach, never showed getting upset...not typical for the artsy type :)

Speaking of an accident, can't seem to get lights going on this, but there's enough here to show that the Genesis dwarf took the pose that I made for the full size Michael 6, and Genesis 2 is able to wear the dwarf's clothing. The dwarf is about the size of Hein.

I know. I always felt like was specifically talking softly so he wouldn't disturb anyone.

He always reminded me of a commentator in the background that didn't want to draw your attention away from what you were watching.
