Tigers don't purr, they chuff. The sound is similar, but purring is caused by a vibrating artery in a cat's chest (probably*) while chuffing is caused by breathing out through the lips.I understand that Tigers can purr as well. Lions don't, though.
*That's the leading theory, anyway. Scientists aren't 100% sure; it is different from chuffing though.
I'm not sure I want to get close enough to a Big Cat to see if it purrs.
