HISTORY:
As A.P.E.s (Armored Personal Exoskeletons) have become an ever increasing sight on modern battlefield the need for more rapid deployment was self evident. Traditionally A.P.E.s must be deployed onto the field by armored air drop, marched into battle, or deployed by armored carriers. All of these methods can leave the A.P.E. vulnerable to attack during deployment. The Murdock APU was born from the crazy idea of creating a flying A.P.E. that could be rapidly deployed. The core chassis of the Murdock is built around numerous vectored thrust engines and verniers, allowing limited flight without the cumbersome flight pack. Steering is achieved by shifting body weight and manipulation of legs and hips - though this is far more complex than it sounds and requires extensive training. The Murdock is commonly fitted by an extended flight pack, which adds additional fuel, a powerful thruster system for flight, and variably configuration wings that can not only allow for lift, but carry ordinance. The systems needed for flight and vectored thrust take substantial space and weight, resulting in the armor of the Murdock being far more fragile that traditional A.P.E.s. While the Murdock can easily withstand small arms fire, against more powerful weapons and adversaries the Murdock must rely on it's speed and maneuverability.
As a result of the complexity of the Murdock's systems and the intricate training required for successful operation, the deployment of the M7 was limited to specialized units. Most commonly the M-7 Murdock is arranged into Airborne Ranger units, and some elite operational units. While the Murdock is still relatively new, and has not had significant opportunity to establish notable achievements, it has been used effectively in numerous small actions, skirmishes, border conflicts, and clandestine operations. With it's ability to hover, sideslip, and perform popup ambushes, the Murdock has become an ideal weapon in urban conflicts or dense uneven geography. The Murdock's capacity for extreme low level flying also makes it ideal to slip in beneath radar and engage SAM and anti-aircraft emplacements. The versatile wing hardpoints on the flight pack also allow the Murdock to carry a variety of mission specific ordinance.
