I am SO glad you're back!

I've zero problems with windows 10. I suspect it's because I waited until all bugs were discovered by 1 billion beta testers. Plus mine is a fully installed copy. Not the upgrade. Poser Pro 2014, Poser 9 both work just fine. Still, you do get option of rolling back to your previous version.

I have to admit, it's better than my old windows 7 home premium.

That's awful! I still have to port somethings over to my new puter from an old one.

By the way, the contest is a super-hero contest. It's over at Rendo. I don't think I'll win but maybe I can get an honorable mention. Check the Community center.

I went to Amazon and bought a copy of Windows 7 Home for that very reason.
I should probably buy Win7 Pro. This laptop was pre-built with Home and I had the store upgrade it to Pro, but I'm pretty sure the disc they gave me is for upgrading only.

Oh, I've seen advertisements for that contest on their site. Good luck. ;)

I'm not worried about how my apps will work with Win10, I'm dead set against my computer having to "phone home" all the time. That just rubs me the wrong way. They have no right to my personal information at all, and I have no desire to give it to them.

I haven't noticed that but then there is a lot going on "behind the scenes" that I don't know about. I know I've been able to kill my internet connection, reset my DNS and have everything work fine. Still, I don't blame you. That free upgrade was offered last year and I waited until the last possible micron to make the switch and then didn't. Then I got to thinking. Miss B is a lot smarter than I am and I can google better than my niece (not my son. That boy is incredible) so I found this. 30 different things that reports back to microsoft that you can turn off. 30 Ways Your Windows 10 Computer Phones Home to Microsoft

I was also surprised to learn that Adobe also gets to know every page of every online book that I've read.

That is freakin' scary.

It makes me wish I were smart enough to make an operating system that is truly spyproof. Unfortunately I learned a long time when my Commodore 64 failed to prosper that you can not fight the wind. But you know, I would if I could.

Why on earth would Adobe want to know what books you're reading? Somehow I don't see a connection between any Adobe products and reading eBooks.

As far as spyproof computers, I don't think they exist, just like I don't believe there's a server somewhere in the world that absolutely cannot be hacked 100% of the time. Probably the main reason I don't do online banking.

Deep Blue might be unhackable but the easiest hack in the world is having the passwords, Guest, Password and of course 1,2,34,5.

Still in some minute things it's not necessarily a bad thing. You can catch bad people doing terrible things as in the last presidential election here in the USA.

Oh and lovely. I do online banking all the time.

This is me. Nothing on my computer phones home unless I tell it to. Bends some programs out of shape, how sad, too bad, it's MY computer, comprende, you piece of data!

Have you tried Foxit Reader, Rob? It starts faster, has a smaller footprint, is free and doesn't care what you read. I ditched Adobe Reader for it years ago.

The fact that Windows 10 phones home and the fact that I can't chose what to update turned me off. I won't go to it until Windows 7 stops working with what I am doing. I have to convince my mother to upgrade her computer now. She is still on XP...

Yeah, I liked XP too. I stayed on it until Windows 7. Too many of my friends had Vista because they were buying new computers and it had so many problems I didn't want to deal with. Turns out, all Windows 7 turned out to be was Vista with the bugs removed. But it's stable now and I prefer to stay with it. Maybe I will move to 10 in a couple years.

I learned to wait a long ago when I bought Windows Xp. Six Months later they came out with Windows XP Special Edition. Basically Windows XP without the bugs and of course they wanted full price. Windows 10 is free but now after reading this thread I'm finding out there is a cost. Freedom.

Much thanks to giving out all this knowledge. And I'm going to give Foxit reader a try.

Yeah, the noose is tightening...

The computer companies seem to only be competing for our money. All these new OS's they come out with prove that. They release them too fast to make sure they get it out ahead of the competition, and then it's half baked and full of bugs. Some of them are in there on purpose. Some are accidental. But it is what it is, right? I am happy with what I have for now.

I don't use Adobe reader either. I don't know what reader I have on my phone, which is where I do most of my reading, but I am certain it is recording what I am reading, not so much word for word, but titles. I get recommendations based on what I look at. No big deal for now...

But that's pretty much the case with anything that accesses the internet anymore.

Facebook tracks everything you do online and sells some of that info. Worse, their privacy practices change so it's impossible to know if your privacy settings are actually doing what you think they do. Then you have the third party apps and games on Facebook, which are less transparent even than Facebook. Twitter tracks your activity online. Pandora tracks your personal data ... and shares it. Skype has been accused of both releasing your personal data and of eavesdropping on your calls. They store IMs, voicemail messages, and video messages for up to 90 days. Dropbox has access to the personal files you store ... as do all other big cloud services. Amazon has a wealth of private information they collect from us and claim not to share it, but reserves the right to do so, and has been sued for sharing the information they collect. Google is rather upfront with the fact they collect every bit of personal information and share a lot of that information with others. Not really any different than Microsoft and Windows 10. Apple has just as much access to your personal information as Microsoft, but is far less transparent. How Apple manages to avoid the ire that Microsoft so easily collects always amazes me. Apple is just a different way of spelling Microsoft.

Don't forget all the sites we visit during a day online. Many of them are far less transparent about what they are collecting and sharing ... and yeah. They have access to quite a bit of personal information.

Oh, and did we mention our internet providers? Or the government? Difference between governments and big business is that big business spies on us so they can make money off us while governments spy on us because we are all terrorists in hiding. Ok ... maybe that's a bit of my personal paranoia showing o_O

Fortunately, I lead a rather boring life, so I doubt anyone is all that titillated over my activities, but I sure don't kid myself that any number of 3 letter agencies has easy access to every bit of my life and personal information.

So, while I may not upgrade to Windows 10 (because 7 Pro ain't broke), I'm not going to lose a lot of sleep when it comes time to buy a new computer and my only choice will be Windows 10.

I am amazed as I look back through this thread how much the topics have changed. And none of it is boring.

I really don't care how much of my personal information is gathered. Mainly because there isn't much I can do about it, and with everything else I have to worry about in my life, I don't have time to fret about it. I think the only way to deal with it is one I don't personally want to go to: fall off the grid and live in the mountains like a hermit. No thanks. Collect my information. They had it already anyway; long before we even knew they were collecting it. If you do any form of social media (which this is), you are ripe for the picking. I don't do Facebook or Twitter or any of those other things. That copy of Windows 7 was the first non-children's book purchase I made on Amazon. If you have a credit card, or a debit card, they got you. Our precious smart cars, TV's and phones collect information too. We got ourselves into this mess.

The sad thing is, there are a lot of "sheeple" out there who don't even know anything about any of this...

The main reason I disallow any computer programs to talk to the net is the horrendous data usage. At least on my phone nothing tries to update while I'm using mobile data but as soon as I make the phone a hotspot anything turned on will start trying to update. It's the reason Microsoft updates are turned off. Like you, Satira, I have a boring life not worth stealing but that's not to say I won't get hacked. So I have stronge passwords, apps platform is turned off on FB, and no script runs on Firefox. Thus far...

I don't worry about data usage. I only access the internet on WIFI, but I still want to control updates and such because my old laptop would lag when I was downloading while trying to work in Poser or 3DSMax, which both use a lot of CPU...

Now that is something I found to be true when I was still dealing with Windows 7. When there was a critical update (At least once a month) My computer would lag and complain until I complied.

I kept control of what updated and when. Still a good policy.

I'm tired of the terrible Hexagon feeling when practicing. So rokket, Z-Brush or 3DSMax? My son is a student, I'm a Veteran (like you) so I can get a good rate.

Both programs have a huge learning curve. To me, ZBrush is mainly for sculpting organic figures and not good for modeling, say, a car. 3DSMax is good for A LOT of different applications, but is really expensive. I made out because I got the program from a guy who bought a hard copy DVD and never installed it. I have a lifetime license as far as I can tell. I could never afford the program outright. He found out I was into 3D modeling and GAVE it to me. No cost. I am blessed.
