Well now, I don't know about Rokket, but where I'm from, as well as where I currently live, "as" is always followed by something. "Sweet as sugar" for instance. There's always a "something" after the word where I am. Leaving it at the word "as" around here, and people will give you the same response your friend did, because it's an incomplete thought and an incomplete sentence.
But I get the basic gist of what you're saying when you say it, too.

I'd never seen that usage of "as " either but figured it was a figure of speech where the other person was supposed to insert their own word at the end in accordance with the first word. If it was "sweet" then it was likely a compliment etc. Glad to see I was on the right track.

I hate to rain on your parade Lorraine but it does sort of get used over here...you can blame all those kiwis who live over here.
