Living on Nantucket was an interesting experience and was both very difficult for me and exactly where I wanted and needed to be.

The entire island has a year round population around 10,000. In the summer, that jumps to 50,000ish. Nantucket is about 47.8 square miles (124 km).

I started my Artist in Residency in a January and stayed in a tiny, TINY one room cabin/cottage until May when I moved out to the barn.

How small was it?

So small, the litter box had to be put in the shower!

I felt very isolated. I had to restrict contact with all my friends because there was no local dialup number. It was a long distance call ... so I really budgeted my time. But it was so difficult to go from being able to chat with my friends for hours every night to ... barely being able to talk to anyone. But then, I was there to work on sculpture! Which I did. I had some contact with other artists, but not really all that much. I'm not all that outgoing and it's hard for me to meet people. I'd been divorced about a year by then, and I was dealing with the loss of 19 years of dreams being no more.

I'd also spent several months before then staying with a friend in Orlando who was going through a nasty divorce. That turned out not to be a very good situation. She'd started drinking (well, probably not started), got an DUI for being parked at the side of the road drunk, and I got pulled into the custody fight because I was staying with her. The deposition was just plain ugly! And with my cropped hair, you can imagine some of the accusations he threw at me. But ... I could continue to live there if I paid rent to him. Despite his concerns for his 13 year old daughter. Clearly, cropped hair on a woman means one thing.

While the isolation was so difficult, it was the very first time that I was on my own! I didn't have to deal with anyone. And Nantucket in the winter is absolutely beautiful. The sky is alight with stars upon stars upon stars. I could walk anywhere I wanted to, no matter how late at night. Which was a good thing because it was the worst winter Nantucket had had in a long time. My car was stuck in the parking lot for weeks at a time because of the snow storms.

Anyway ... I imagine you didn't expect a book.

ORCA!!! *sniff* Now you're making me homesick! LOL

Dang it. You can take the girl off the mountain, but you can't ever take the mountain out of the girl. No matter how long I've lived out here, I still miss those mountains. And the ocean...

I was like "Orca? Up a mountain?" then I saw 'And the ocean' ;)

It sounds like it was a tough period, but maybe a good period for rebuilding some of yourself or for growth, Satira.

Don't apologize for writing a book. It happens to me a lot no matter how hard I try not to sometimes. Maybe you just needed to get it out. :)

Afternoon all...today was a much better day.
It was a busy day, Pen! Sorry about your classroom. What a pain! And sitting with a book is a very good plan.
Yep that and the lemon rusky I drank while reading the forum worked a treat!
That's the part I find so silly about many Americans thinking that New Mexico is part of Mexico. Those same people are well aware that New Jersey, New Hampshire, ans New York are in the US. Why they would think NM is PART of Mexico makes no sense at all.
I'd be willing to bet that some people are confused by New England also...all they see/hear is the second part of it.

I hope today goes better mam. {{hugs}}
Thanks Terre!:grouphug: It went so much better but the child from yesterday didn't come today. Monday is going to be a very interesting day.

Just wait until you have manatees. We have a manatee county and a manatee town. Manatees, otherwise known as sea cows.
Welcom Mivan, manatees sure are interesting creatures...iirc over here they are called Dugongs.

It's a windy cool day in Opua and oh yay, oh yay! autumn has arrived :) I was so over the heat and humidity and all round ickness. So nice to be able to cuddle under my blanket at night instead of laying there in a lather.
I think your heat headed over here we had 36 degrees today and it was very hot!

Satira, that sounds like even though it was difficult at times that it would have been a wonderful experience and an opportunity to grow as an artist...I didn't have a problem with a book. It was lovely of you to share that experience with us. :grouphug:

That's just tooooooo hot! And in autumn too! We warmed up as the day progressed but I doubt it was over 25. I just closed the doors as was getting a little cool.

Too right...but we always get hot weather in March. Was very warm on yard duty today. I had to slap on some sunscreen...

Lorraine

Yard duty sounds like you need to get danger money! Don't the kids get too hot outside on a day like that or are they used to it?

If it gets really hot they do an extreme weather timetable but it has to be up closer to 40 for that to happen.

Lorraine

The Wicked Witch of the North
Wow. Shows the climatic diff between our two countries. If we had 36 degrees they'd probably declare a civil defence emergency and have police cars out in the streets warning people to stay indoors. If it got to 40...I think we would all die.

I was diving years ago in the Sebastian inlet on the SE coast of Florida, collecting some very rare tube worms for resale in the aquarium industry. Sebastian is noted for its shark population so in collecting
I let my wary eye slip to the task at hand and suddenly this huge shape appeared immediately behind me. My first thought was God, that is a big............Manatee! Think I pee'ed in my wetsuit. This one was
a good 9 or 10 feet long and a girth that would put a phone pole to shame. Upon seeing me move he took off. I had no idea they were capable of such sudden speed. So unlike their usual lethargic gate.

Wow...sounds like you have an interesting job. I'm heading off to a school carnival today. I'm running the mini golf...

We had about 1 1/2 to 2 inches of snow overnight, but it's already gone, or most of it, because the sun is shining brightly out there. Then again, it was shining brightly out there yesterday too, so the snow shower must've been over pretty quickly.

Ick, snow! Nice and warm here :)

@Mivan that would have made me pee my wetsuit too! Do the manatees do what the dugongs do...wrap their arms around you and get amorous? My friend got grabbed by one in Vanuatu and it took her under the water. Fortunately she was able to get away and she didn't go swimming near them again.

Have fun with your mini-golf, Pen, and make LOTS of money :)

Back now and made about $90...we were stuck between the cupcake stall and the fairy floss stalls. The kids went straight for the sweets but we did get a few come and play.

Now if you'd been between the fruit stall and the vege stall, you'd have made a mint! Well done on capturing some of the cupcake and candy floss money :)
