Satira, I do hope you can one day have your tiny home...mine is classified as one and it's for me, the only way to live. I have a small oven but still require bending over to get things in and out. The door opens sideways which makes it easier.

Ah, sourdough. It's an amazing thing. A jar of gloopy whiteness that smells funny transmogrifies flour and water into something wonderful. It's a return to a time before industrialisation and fast food. Mother, flour, water, salt and time. That's all it takes. No kneading (unless you want to), just time.

No, Satira, you don't have to feed it everyday if you keep it in the fridge. The fermentation slows down and it hibinates. When I want to make some bread I take it out of the fridge and feed it, leaving it on the bench overnight. Next morning it gets another feed, then in the arvo I add the flour and salt, mix it, leave it for an hour or so, mix it again, tip it out, give it a quick knead just to shape it and put it in the tin. This time I put the tin in the fridge overnight as I didn't want to do a late bake. Next day, took tin out of fridge, nicely slow risen, allowed it to warm up and rise some more then baked it. Slow food but yummy food.

Yeah, I saw it here; I haven't been following his thread really. I put up an answer real quick before we had to leave the house, though.

Sundays are always busy days for us. I've been out of the house more than in it, and I have to go back out again soon to do the dreaded grocery shopping. *shudders* I HATE shopping.

Satira, that sounds like a great kitchen. I totally feel your pain on high counters and even higher cupboards. My kitchen was built for a woman who was over 6 foot tall, and I am EXACTLY 5ft tall without shoes on. I end up climbing or using step stools and hoping they put me up high enough (and they usually don't...)

Lorraine, those look good. :) Too bad I'm not able to eat breads, or you might just get robbed of your sourdough! LMAO

I will have to remember that for the sour dough. :) I have made kombucha, ginger ale, kefir, and yogurt. I even tried my hand at making homemade raw milk cheese, mostly cheddar. OH yummy!

There's an interesting hypothesis that sourdough bread may be more tolerable to wheat or gluten intolerant folk because of the long fermentation. The gluten is changed somewhat by the length of time and some people can eat it. My friend, Beth, is gluten intolerant but loves bread so the next time I am visiting her we are going to use her as a guinea pig and experiment. Bahahahaha, me as evil scientist :p

Lianam, I am also a fermenting freak! Kraut, water kefir, tried milk kefir but didn't like it, apple cider vinegar and soon, MEAD! And of course, sourdough. I'll be happy to pass on my recipe if you get some starter :)

I forgot about the Kraut and apple cider vinegar! I made some dill pickle relish. Homemade is the best. Why don't you live near me?? We could garden, ferment, etc together. lol

Yeah... it didn't work so well for me when we tried it. :) I ended up in the hospital with a "minor" GI bleed. My body does not like the stuff at all. LOL But I think my intolerance to it is just about a half step below a celiac patient, so I'm not typical of most who are just intolerant of it.

I used to be 5 foot, 1 and 1/2 or something like that. I suppose I'm not quite so tall anymore since we kinda shrink as we age.

I gave up long ago even attempting to use the top two shelves of the cupboards. I put stuff up there when I moved in that I wasn't planning on using much, like my stoneware casserole dishes and what not. With just me, I don't tend to make casseroles. What I use gets stored in the dishwasher. At least I can reach that :p

I don't go grocery shopping anymore. I do all my shopping, including groceries, online and have it delivered. Saves me gas, time, and more importantly, my sanity.

Oh, I totally don't blame you one bit, Satira. :)

Unfortunately, I need to be able to read the labels on things very, very closely before I buy anything. I just can't trust it to whoever picks the stuff off the shelves, especially because things like gluten and dairy are hidden in all sorts of stuff that you would never think would have it. (Look at the ingredients on a can of tomato soup, for instance... instead of using tomato paste, they use wheat flour to thicken it...)

I am so lucky in not having any food allergies or intolerances and I really feel for peeps who have them. I can not imagine life without the food I love to cook and eat. Seliah, I'm really sorry sourdough wasn't good for you BUT I do know heaps of my fellow fermenters make gluten free sourdough bread. It's more difficult as the yeasts do seem to prefer wheat and rye flour but there's enough of them doing it to know it can be very successful. And it's still a slow lacto fermented bread with real honest to goodness free range yeasts and bacteria doing their thing to keep those peeps happy and healthy.

Lianam, we can be fermenting buddies across the ocean! So cool to meet someone here who is into it too :) My darling friends, all except Rose, get that glazed look when I talk fermenting, just like they do when I talk 3D.

I'm so glad the only thing I'm allergic to is chocolate. Of course, that's the one thing I crave all the time, so my sinuses are usually in bad shape all year 'round.

Too much chocolate at night also keeps me awake for too long before I can fall asleep because of the caffeine.

LOL. I have so many dang allergies it's nuts... and then there's all the things that either just make me sick to my stomach (chicken, pork, turkey... pretty much any "commercial" meat except beef...), and all the things that just simply don't work on me at all even though they should...

Dairy - intolerant. Gluten - BADLY intolerant. Bees - deathly allergic. As in, the epi pen might or might NOT work, and the ambulance sure won't get to me in time if it doesn't work, allergic. Yep, I am absolutely terrified of bees and wasps because I know they will kill me if they sting me.

Morphine - allergic. Yup, the stuff makes me violent. As in, shoot me with a tranquilizer gun from 50 yards away because if it moves I go after it... violent. And then hope the tranquilizer WORKS....

Amoxacillin - just as badly allergic to this as I am to bees/wasps.

Anything in the -mycin family of drugs (such as, for instance, azithromycin, clindamycin, etc) - yup, allergic

Tylenol - well, not allergic to it, thank heavens... but it's about the same as giving me a water pill. It's just flat out ineffective.

Local anaesthesia - totally ineffective.

General anaesthesia - ....I wake up from it. Quickly. And oh yeah. When I DO come up from general anaesthesia, I come up fighting... LOL

...........and people REALLY wonder why I usually self treat via herbals/natural medicines for as much as is safe to do so!!

Geeze, I wish diuretics were ineffective on me. Unfortunately, I have to take them every other day, and usually take it at night so I don't get caught when I'm out of the house. Of course, that usually means I don't sleep as well on those nights. :(

Believe me, I check labels too. But, it's much easier to read product information on product pages than it is to try to get out the magnifying glass to read the tiny print on the package! My eyes just aren't all that happy with tiny print anymore. I could read highway signs miles before anyone else in the car could, but the downside to that is being far-sighted, my aren't long enough anymore to be able to read things up close :whistling:

For example, this is the product information for Amy's Organic Low-Fat Cream of Tomato Soup.

When people ask me about shopping online, they usually expect that the shoppers aren't going to be discriminating about fruits, vegetables, meats, etc. But I only had a problem a few times years ago with that. It really depends on the store/service. Not all of them are going to be as concerned with customer satisfaction. So ... I don't shop from those stores.

I currently use FreshDirect, which is out of NYC, and I've yet to be dissatisfied with produce, meats, or deli. Not that I get meat or deli all that often.

Wow, Seliah, remind me NOT to shoot you with a tranquilliser gun :eek: or anything else I think. Gosh I am so boring. I am non-lifethreateningly allergic only to cat and dog hair, dust mites, kapok and synthetic perfumes. I get rhinitis and a not serious asthmatic cough. And I get a rash from the triptyline antidepressives. That's it. No food, no drink, and no other medicines but that one. I rather like boring.

One of my friends, who used to live in this building, always shops FreshDirect. I was so used to seeing the truck parked outside when they were delivering her order, that I miss it now that she's moved.
