Why doesn't Male clothign sell better?

I keep hearing that. And it really doesn't matter what figure you're talking about. So my question today is Why? Are vendors not making stuff for the male figures solely because they BELIEVE that male stuff doesn't sell or are they satisfied by sales data that it's true? Is there something they could do or make to change that dynamic or is it solely up to the customers to turn that around?

I don't find that true at all. Frankly, my Dusk stuff sells as well as the Dawn stuff does.

But, it's really about the fact that so many users are male and they do mostly pinups.

I think the Hivewire Poser base uses male as well as female figures equally, though.

Sure, that makes sense. When I go looking for wardrobe items it's definitely for a specific figure.
I wish libraries would do that too because I think male writers do better mysteries and female writers do better fantasies.
Books that are mystery/fantasy are a toss up.

There is also global art trend, at least from 1850. In traditional art more women's portraits are made and sold. The price difference can be big too.

Syckle Yeild has a long post about why she doesn't do more male items on Devientart. It really does come down to lack of sales. She also talks about skimp wear versus "average" clothing, too, IIRC.

While allot of folks do fantasy art/renders there will always be a need for everyday clothing, male or female. In the real world go to the mall or clothing store and look at the selection for women VS men.... it's even in real life, there is more variety for the "fairer sex" than for men. It's a mind set. Back in the olden days when guys wore frilly shirts, powdered faces and wigs I'm quite sure there was as much variety for men as their were for women but somewhere along the way the males kept "dumbing down" their dress to business suits, jeans and T's and cargo shorts. LOL

Exactly! Historical clothing has more variety for males, especially for various ethnicities and fantasy and sci-fi, give more leeway, but for modern clothing, unless you are looking at runway clothing (which is art, not meant for daily wear), it's pretty boring. And if you look at female clothing, it's also becoming more homogeneous. It's part of the drive for Androgynity.

Which is where male jewelry, socks and ties start coming in. And textures for shirts/graphics for t-shirts. There are quite a few different cuts for jackets, but the casual eye won't likely pick most of them out.

Things I would like to see made for modern Male characters (including teens):

Double breasted suits
Other collar/lapel variations- suits
Cuffed and non-cuffed pants
Pleated pants
Varieties of vests (You can have a lot of variation in vests, actually)
Hawaiian style shirts (can be used for several other types of clothing)
Uniforms, both formal and informal
More kinds of hats- beret, chauffeur, Uniform,
Tennis shoes- varieties, including high-top, running, skate, climbing
Bow ties
Poseable ties of various widths
I know there is a fantastic tux coming out soon
Dress shoes
Loafers
Moccasins- both high and low and ankle variety
Tabbie shoes
Socks-dress, knee hi, ankle, crew
Overalls
Coveralls
Boxers
Surfer Jamms
Sports Shorts
Jersey style shirts

Casual button-ups for work/leisure (short sleeved in general)
Sweat pants
Jogging pants

I'd like to see someone do a male suit (single or double-breasted, doesn't matter) where the shoulders keep their shape and behave like shoulders on a real suit. I have one suit that does this... from the M3 era.

Consider how much variety exists for men's clothing in the REAL world. Not much, unless you live in Japan, where there is nearly as much variety, but that's an exception. Japanese men are very fashionable, but not the rest of the world as far as I know. Just go to a real store and find the little section for men, where clothing are all the same, and then rest of the store for women.

So far I made 2 outfits for Dusk, and the sales speak for itself. Dawn's clothing in my store sell *way* more, I can't even compare. So of course, I am not very compelled to make more stuff for Dusk. It's a matter of demand, and consider I only sell those here at HW. I guess the market regulates itself by offer and demand.

The way weight mapping works, one joint bending in both directions, this would be impossible unless the Arm Up joint was very limited in some manner. Otherwise, that "shoulder pad" area will simply collapse on itself when the arm is bent in an up position.

My hubby has one pair of Pants, one pair of Jeans (he lives in shorts even in winter so has a few like boardshorts and dress/casual shorts), 2 shirts, several t-shirts/singlet shirts. One pair of work shoes, one pair of dress shoes and flip flops/slides. And heaps of running gear

I think if a male character has a good set of "basics" for everyday gear then he's set as you can get a few different looks just with textures a lot of the time. Fantasy/SciFi is a bit different as anything goes.

I've found that as much as there are artists that do "everyday" scenes and even Fantasy/SciFi that there are even more that just do pin-ups which are normally scantily clad (and which are usually female orientated anyway) so yes, skimp-ware outsells a lot of other options.

Ahhh, but any trip to Renderosity's gallery will show that just as many male scantily clad images are done as female. Frankly, most male images I see are just shy of nude with nothing more than speedos.

(just like Porn, the majority is men looking at ladies. Are there men and women that like looking at men? hell yeah, but its still not as big as market as the other way round.)

But the shoulders don't deform when you move his arms, and the shoulders don't make him look like he's smuggling bowling balls.

Well, in the real world, people's movement is limited in the arms when wearing a buttoned up suit, or even an unbuttoned suit jacket due to the more rigid construction of the shoulderpads and tight back. So, that wouldn't be an issue I would think to put extra limits on it.

OK, now try to touch his hat with his hand and watch what the shoulder does. That's the "Arm Up" I am talking about. The only way to make that work would be to allow that shoulder pad to intersect itself and no commercial QA would accept that kind of rigging. Besides, it would look stupid. <g>

OK, question . . . what are those 2 roundish pieces on the top right of the UV Map? I would suggest cutting a seam through each, which will make them lay flat, and then would be easier to texture.

Another thing, though it's lying flat as is, I usually make the front and back separate pieces, so not only do I make side seams, I make shoulder seams as well.

As far as the layout of the pieces, I would make sure the pieces are all laying in the same direction. IOW, if you make separate pieces for the front and back, the shoulders on both should be up. The same would be true of the two panty pieces. Some textures can cause problems, if not flowing in the same direction on all pieces. Otherwise, you would have to rotate the texture over some pieces to make sure it's all flowing properly.

Couldn't it be fixed with a jcm? I know that some vendors even create jcm's that add the correct drape to a garment when that joint is moved...
