The Anchorage, Part 3

McG. it looks like it's as much of a mess as when our house got renovated 11 years ago. It still had the cloth insulated wiring from when it was built back in '52.

Got a question for you as well: Can you explain how a bread mix can be Paleo? Any explanation you come up with is going to be far more sensible than that oxymoron which I came across today while researching something I need to order in for the store..

I'd love to here McG's version because it will be so much more entertaining than mine, but I believe the Paleo bread doesn't contain grains or dairy. Paleo is allowed to eat seeds, just not grains.

What are they going to leaven the bread with if they claim to be eating only what our paleolithic ancestors ate? That's the problem. Bread of any form didn't appear until the Neolithic.
Also some claim to be eating only foods that existed back then. No grindstones to turn the seeds into powder have been found before farming was adopted. This puts us back to bread being neolithic to modern. It has no business being labeled Paleolithic.

I know that's not how the people pushing this diet think but I'm the daughter of an archaeologist and an anthropologist who grew up reading about those subjects and paleontology. Disconnects like bread being labeled Paleo just look WRONG.
Basically it's all marketing gimmicks so people can eat the foods they are used to while thinking they are eating ancient foods.

Boy are my thought disorganized. (This is normal for me I'm afraid.)

Another aspect of this situation is that if someone is actually eating bread they are eating quite a bit more seeds than would have happened (pre)historically which renders the idea that the diet our species evolved on is healthier than the modern diet moot. You're still eating more carbs than early stone age people did.

That's one of the things I love about this place, you learn so much, not just about 3D art and often something that spurs you on to look a little deeper in an attempt to improve your own education.

Terre, I think they just named it Paleo, and didn't exactly mean that time period :) Its like anything else, some people follow it strictly and others will pick and choose what they want. Some say no dairy at all, others say clarified butter is fine (how many cavemen would clarify their butter? :p) People really didn't start to have problems until we started over processing, bleaching, genetically modifying etc food, so I think they are trying to eat like a lifestyle before all that started.

Hornet, that's why I love this site also :D

Basically, yes. what bugs is the taking over a name that actually has meaning.
There are actually some who really are trying to eat like hunter-gatherers. If they stick to it that diet will be much healthier than what most Americans eat.

Customer request a half hour ago: "Chopped bell peppers and onions like you would use for salsa."

In New Mexico? My guess is they are recent arrivals who are trying to find/make the kind of stuff they call salsa.
ETA: I've been told there are Taco Bells back East who make tacos with bread. Keeping that in mind I can see people making salsa with sweet peppers.

I don't think I've ever eaten a taco at a Taco Bell, but I sure remember the ones I used to eat when visiting family in Tucson. Man, those were good.

As for salsa, years ago when I was working most Sundays, there was a gal who had been a chef, and boy could she make salsa. She used to make it for our weekend holiday party every year, and then would bring in a large jar of it for me the following week. Pure 7th Heaven. ~licks lips just thinking about it~

I'll let you guys hog the salsa ... as well as the guacamole.

I'm not crazy about peppers, whether they are red, green, or hot. I prefer green onions to onions, though even those I like sparingly.

Think of your pickiest eater, and I'm right there beside them :p

Too bad chocolate doesn't cover all the required food groups.

It doesn't?!? God damn it, I can't use that excuse anymore! No! I will not give up my Chocolate!

They can keep the peppers (capsicum and chilli) as the literally make me sick (if my immune system is down I can start to go into anaphylactic shock)

I just don't enjoy spicy foods. I don't even stock black pepper in my kitchen. Though, I do have paprika, though it's rare I use it.

Oddly, I rather like BBQ Chips ...

I'm not too crazy about guacamole either, but I do like spicy, as long as it's not tooooo spicy. If I have to grab a bottle of water right away to wash it down, then it's too spicy.

If they resemble some of these pics they are what I'm used to calling tacos. Explore our Products

Actually butter or whole milk works better for capsacin. Water does wash some away but it also traps some under it. Fat actually bonds with it apparently.

Tortas (Mexican sandwiches) are an authentic thing and have been around a long time. Spicy, Seared, Smothered, Stacked: An Introduction to Mexican Sandwiches We have had a timeshare in Cancun for almost 20 years now and that is where I first ran into them.
From the description of the lady who had it happen they were trying to use sandwich bread instead of corn tortillas as taco shells. It would have been better to just make soft tacos.
