The Anchorage, Part 3

Hahahaha! They would have been quite at home on Sans Souci this morning...what a doozy of a frost! I shudder to think how cold the boat would have been if I hadn't had the fire going all night. She really needs some insulation does my old lady. It's so funny after seeing all your Northeners posts about your winters to read in the news about the frosts throughout NZ last night...we are NOT used to being that cold after our warm winter to date. Bunch of sooks we are ;)

It depends on the type of wood fire you have, Satira, as to whether they will keep going all night. We had a beauty when I lived ashore, stoke it up before going to bed and it was still going in the morning, ready for another load of wood. That fire went constantly from May to September. My fire on the boat is diesel fueled and doesn't need any stoking. It just burns away, with a jolly yellow flame until you turn off the tap :)

We'd bank it in the evening, and would still have coals in the morning, so that was great. But, it would still be too cold for me in the morning! Unless I got dressed beside the wood stove :p

When I was growing up, we had an oil stove ... which had the same problem. Great if you were next to it, but if you were in the bedrooms, it got a wee bit cold. Especially, if you closed the doors for privacy. Or because both your parents smoked and you wanted to breathe.

Wanting to breathe is always a good thing. I dress by my heater if it's been going all night and have my clothes hanging near it, all toasty warm and ready :)

Just heard that Cuckoo the catamaran is leaving New Plymouth RIGHT NOW on its maiden voyage to Opua! So exciting!

I have to say, they will be very 'cool' indeed! Tonight's going to be another cold one and they're way further south. Brrrr, hope they have lots of woollies and beanies and thermals.

I will let you know, I will be down on the dock screaming and yelling with all the rest and taking lots of photos. With all going well on the boat they should be half way to Cape Reinga (the top bit of NZ) now. They are not hugging the coast thus no cellphone coverage, they are on a rhumb line from New Plymouth to the Cape, so no news till maybe tomorrow night.

An update: reached Ahipara, the southern end of Ninety Mile Beach (which is only 60 miles long) at 5am and will be rounding the top of NZ right about now. All well on board :)
