The Anchorage, Part 3

Lorraine: my sympathies mam. More reno work next summer doesn't sound fun at all. {{hugs}}
As far as the subject of things growing out of the wall........ When I was 5 my dad (working for the Civil Service) got sent to Japan for two years. (Civil Service employees who work for the military get moved like actual military do. The difference is my dad could delay being sent back to the States until I finished 1st grade while a military family just has to deal with the disruption in the kid's schooling) He wasn't high enough rank to live on base so we lived in an apartment building in the city of Kure. The windows had rice paper windows (young kids and rice paper... Yes my window did have to get replaced shortly after we moved in) which we kept shut when winter came. Then I noticed a foot long plant growing out of the wall behind my dresser. It turns out that back then (late '60s) many buildings still had mud as a layer of plaster on the inside with paint sprayed on it. We learned to keep the windows cracked in winter so it didn't get humid enough for more plants to grow.

Pen: great news! Congratulations. :)

Hi Terre, and thank you for the hug, I needed it. Been in a rot induced funk since I found it but I'm starting to surface. I think if I found a foot long thing growing out of the wall I'd just call it quits and go for a permanent swim ;)

So my problem is drying out the wall without letting more water in over the winter. At the moment it's covered in plastic but that's not going to enable drying, there needs to be some airflow. So my mind has been spinning like a hamster wheel, trying to come up with a solution. I think I've come up with one but will need to talk to someone more knowledgable after the weekend. In the meantime I'm trying to stay perky and warm, the warm being more achievable at the mo. Onward and upward though the mountain be steep and the path be rough.

Let's hope you find a quick resolution, be it temporary for now, and a full resolution after the winter, if indeed it can't be done before.

That's right, you guys are going into winter now.

We had 3 very warm/hot days the middle of this week, which is waaaaay too soon for air-conditioning as far as I'm concerned. The temp went down to the mid/high 60s yesterday, but the humidity was still high. Today, however, it's absolutely gorgeous. I just got back from running errands wearing a light linen blazer, and it was just perfect, even with the sun shining brightly. I so wish we had weather like this all year 'round.

Pretty good in sunny Morecambe too! In fact I'm planning to take my camera to the top of the hump (or wave reflection feature in local council speak) they've built at the end of the road to take a few panorama's across the bay. Mind you, I'll check the weather forcast first - twice! :whistling:

I sooo love living alone!

I just put an empty milk carton back in the refrigerator, and no one is going to yell at me about it!

I'll rinse it out later ... when I feel like it :p
See, now, I prefer to get all the recyclyables out ASAP. Our building's Porter/Handyman comes up to each floor and empties the recycle bin every day. Otherwise he'd have one hell of a job the day before they come to pick up all of it, and cart it away. In this neighborhood, that's on Wednesdays, so he puts it all out when he puts out all the garbage bags on Tuesday, because garbage is collected Tuesdays and Fridays. I guess it's easier for him to only have to do all the packing up 2 days a week, instead of 3 days.

While we have a trash chute on each floor, we have to take anything to be recycled down to the recycle bins ourselves. Cardboard is on the Lobby level where I now park so that's more convenient than it was. Upper garage where I used to park is only plastic/paper, but not cardboard.

The garbage room just isn't big enough for us to stack anything in there. Even though some people leave their trash on the floor (especially, pizza and beer boxes). Despite the huge sign in multiple languages that says ... Do not leave trash on the floor. If it doesn't fit through the chute door, take it down to the garbage bins on the Lobby level.

There are just so many advantages to living alone besides storing an empty milk carton in the refrigerator (or perishable food waste in the freezer). Like ... eating when you feel like it instead of when someone else expects dinner to be ready :p

Ohhhh, we have recycle bins, in each compactor room on each floor. They're not huge which is why he comes every day to empty them. Newspapers and such are up on a shelf right above the chute, so he grabs those too while he's at it.

Only things I bring downstairs are, as you mentioned, cardboard boxes I can't flatten easily, or as I did recently, my old blood pressure monitor, because one of the rooms downstairs now has a tech recycling bin. Once we have 20 items in it, he or our Super, calls that team and they come and pick up any tech that's recyclable.

Oh gosh I so sympathise! I have very bad memories of the rentals I lived in before Sans Souci came into my life. And even then the winters aboard her were pretty grim till the diesel heater three winters ago. And that was in the winterless North (whoever came up with that nomenclature wants keelhauling under a dirty boat). I want to see rental warrant of fitnesses and a complete halt to substandard housing in NZ, it's a National crime.

Hear hear. I have been given some places to try and get some help on getting the landlady to do some thing about the lack of insulation and heating so will see what that brings.

Here in the sunny south, we're already in the 90s most days and now the storms which build up with the intense heat. We have intense, fast moving lightening storms, that just leave high humidity behind in the 90 degree sun. Well, and a few downed trees from wind bursts.......
