Runtime DNA merges with DAZ 3D

:sorry: That's what I get for not double-checking the poster info AND typing while I'm being howled at by a cranky over-tired teenager. LMAO

Sorry! :)
No worries at all. Teenagers, eh? So full of life and knowing everything. Those were the days. :whistling:

Yeah. No shinies. None at all. I've basically wiped out my wishlist
I was going to do just that, to the extent I could, but no, they had scrapped it. Stupid money, you should help facilitate trade, not rule our lives and the world. :cautious:

Better call it a night and get some!!
Did play some DnD when I had a group around. Been ages, though. Sleep tight and don't bug the bed or some such. :D

----

All in all, may this place and other free-runners never be merged into the big machine. :balloon01:

This is a great pity.

Daz is following a clever corporate strategy.

Buy and control the content. The content determines the software that gets used. Control the content and the software control the market. Replace all content and software every 18 months and prevent backwards compatibility to force repurchase.

I mentioned this a year ago as a likely outcome of they were doing and again when G3 was Studio only, I was flamed, so I gave up.

DAZ want to control the market, of course they do... they are a corporation its what they do by habit. Its not saying they are evil... they are just a corporation being clever, and doing it well. One of the clever things they are doing is they are trashing the Poser market and selling only DAZ... but the Poser vendors are selling Daz compatibility... so 100% of the product is compatible with Daz only 50% with Poser? Thats a turnaround... and all in the last 12 months... How long before you can only use content that has been "safely uploaded" via Daz Studio bought via a DAZ only store... from DAZ only Vendors... with DAZ digital rights management? Is that fantasy? Well it would make absolute 100% corporate sense.

This is bad for content creators, and customers alike. I hope that more good content creators flee and come home here. I hope Smith Micro wake up and start to help content creators more, I hope they improve CP... lets face it its a site that would have looked good in 1995 not 2016... its awful.

When DAZ controls the market it will be interesting to see the freedom that the RDNA peeps enjoy. I have worked for 3 companies in my time that were taken over. After 12 months the smiles have faded away, the free coffee removed for cost control, you are given a number, relocated to a smaller office, someone less experienced but who always worked for Bigcorp is promoted to be your boss, even though he does not understand your job let alone his own, your creativity is squashed in the name of corporate uniformity... but where can you go if you leave?

I'm not sure there is space for Poser vendors to sit on the fence anymore.

lol I wonder if we could refer to RDNA as having supported 'mature' themes rather than embracing the darkness.. its not like they were supporting human trafficking and blood sacrifices lol. That being said it is definitely a loss in that aspect. It was a nice place that welcomed mature themes and grown up discussions/posts/renders without going all poser porn like renderotica. I find this to be a great and welcoming community but the bent of it to strictly PG13 does feel a bit limiting to me, especially if it is to be my staple for poser content/discussion. While a lot of great artists make great stuff that fits this bill, a great many of those artists also make stuff that does not and the question remains are they going to settle here if they feel restricted. The other question of course... where else will they go?

Damn... It was foretold in the ancient inscriptions on that hippopotamus statue I bought from the one armed man at the flea market, yet I refused to believe it... it took me twelve years to decipher and it was only last night after dinner that if finished... But this is one of the fourteen signs of the apoopalypse... Well, I'm making sure my locust insurance is paid up...
I think despite the upbeat tone of the announcement, I feel bad for them.

I don't feel bad for them one bit. I dont mean that out of lack of respect just that obviously they have been paid well enough that it eclipses what they projected they would make by running the site/store themselves. There is no way they were forced into it, how could they be. Sadly I dont see how any of what made RDNA what it was will survive.

Interesting news, as is all the usual doom and gloom from some, personally I can see it as actually being a good thing, Poser content may well get a boost this way.
As usuale I'm seeing a lot of speculation and mis information, for example Daz do allow non Daz products in there galleries including the Hivewire figures.
But I am concerned about here at Hivewire from what I'm reading I hope this doesn't become the Poser forum, its been bad enough for DS users in other forums and I would hate to feel unwelcome here.

No way, Tparo! There's a whole heap of us DS users here and there's more than enough room for all of us. No one will ever be unwelcome here unless they come here with unwelcoming thoughts and ideas. Hivewire is an inclusive place where the software that you use has no bearing on whether you belong. You belong because you are part of the family.

I think both Alisa and Chris have pointed out a couple times now that we aren't about to exclude users from either program. I'm a DS user myself also.

I'm not happy about the merger. I really do view it as a "buy it and bury it" because that's exactly what they did back with PoserPros, too.

BUT!! I also see this as an opportunity. Maybe it can actually be a way to heal some of the rift that's happened over the years, and maybe it can actually be a way to boost some of the Poser content. The biggest hurdle I see with that, at the moment, is not where artists can go to post (there are lots of galleries to choose from, even for the mature themes, and no I don't mean porn).

But the bigger hurdle right now, is going to be where vendors can sell the sorts of niche items that RDNA did such a great job with. There are a LOT of very PG-restricted sites, and plenty of X-rated sites, but there doesn't seem to be a lot that are in the middle ground. RDNA was great for that; it had the darker, more mature themes, but we didn't have to deal with all the x-rated fetishes or crass, overdone gore for the sake of gore, either. They were really good at pulling off the horror genre without it being "gratuitous."

I think in the long run, this has the potential to be very good for the community as a WHOLE. Not just one program or the other, but everyone. It's an opportunity, as far as I'm concerned.

I hope it does not either. I use both programs. Both have their good and bad bits.

The software is not the issue for me, and I don't blame DAZ for being a corporation and successfully gobbling up the market. If I was running DAZ with shareholders and Banks withholding my bonus unless I demonstrate year on year growth, Hell I would probably be driven to do the same.

I just think it is about time we realised that this is what they are doing and stopped looking at the whole thing through rose coloured glasses. DAZ has a single minded focus, Smith Micro has one product among many... both have different strategies. SM can afford to cut Poser loose and write it down as a tax loss, or sell it to someone...

I would feel the same if Smith Micro went and bought DAZ... not good for the market... and you know stranger things have happened...

I worked for a company in the UK and a big US company wanted to get into our market... so we swamped them. Every time they opened a huge store we opened 3 right around it. They pulled out of the UK. 3 times they tried. In the end they just went and bought us out. Thats when we found out they really hated us. The directors took their bags of money and left, and we staff got pay and benefit cuts, mass store closures and redundancy. Everyone said it would not happen. :)

I really hope this wakes up the community and gives Poser a shot in the arm...

First, welcome to all the new members to the Hive!

Just found out about this an hour ago and still running to catch up.

Hard to imagine a universe without RDNA and their Halloween and Christmas freebies each year.

I'm sure that this was a difficult decision in many ways for Syd, Colm and Eric. It's always hard to know why someone has chosen to do something and I'm sure they had their reasons and believe it is the right thing for them and their futures.

I really wish them well and hope that it works out for them and their families.

I for one will really miss their store. I'm not sure how I feel about Daz buying them out and the store merging. I need more time to think about it and I'm sure many people feel the same way and have concerns over how this will affect them.

If you tried posting them on the forum, the posts would be removed immediately, if not sooner. If you tried uploading them to a gallery, they just wouldn't be accepted. You can't just upload anything in a gallery at DAZ, never could. You upload and keep your fingers crossed it gets approved. One reason why my two galleries have always been at RDNA and R'osity. I really do need to upload a bunch of stuff here too.

Miss B, I have posted many times on Daz forums with images of Hivewire products and in their galleries clearly stating the products. I have not had any of these posts removed. If you check out the Michael and Friends thread you will see my image of Dusk and also some by Seliah of Nataani. I don't always agree with Daz but in this I do think sometimes people accuse them unjustly.

I just hope that what has happened doesn't adversely effect the atmosphere here as I really love this place.

What a morning indeed, I think I'm still a bit confuddled and this is going to take some amount of coffee to clear my head.
Hello to all the Newbees! Welcome to the Hive.

Reading all the posts I'm with Seliah,....this could well work out for the good. The air always smells fresher after a good storm.
Think I will pick up some real wishes over there though, that is if I can find my CC......wich is hiding......

It's realy strange thing to ask on shop forum, but is there any list of all or most active shops with Poser/DAZ content? 'Couse of the top of my head I can name only here, daz, 'sity, CP, PhilC, Mec4d and Xurge.

On the whole situation... It's a pity to lost unique, provocative, artsy but artistic spirit that was there. Well, I'm always sad when big player buy small on consumer market. There was many unique items on RDNA that I can not see on sale in big stores, like Anima Gemini items for example. That I can not see been made for big stores. But if market is as many others, in year or three we will see more small independent shops and may be some aggregators. I hope. If DAZ will not enforce no independent shops policy and Poser or something else will still live. Or Blender will become usable for hobbyists.

Hi there! First off, welcome! Nice to meet you. :)

As far as shops go; in addition to the ones you mentioned, I also know of these...

YURdigital
Fantasy Attic
CG Society
Dana's 3D
Poser Addicts

I know there's others out there, but those are the ones that come to me right away when I think about it.

I feel the same way about the loss of that place. They were around when I first started 3D. I'm really going to miss them. :/ So many unique, niche items... but I also think your right, and that we'll start seeing some other small shops come up and grow a bit over time, too.

Anyway. Welcome to the forums, Phudubrov. :)

Well.... I'll leave my thoughts about RDNA for my own forum, but it's kind of easy on what to do if you are a Poser user at RDNA.

Download ALL your purchases NOW to an external drive.

Delete your gallery pictures.

Delete your freebies.

If you are a vendor, then HW3D and Dana3D are there for you with their stores.

DAZ will NOT allow competing products to survive, so don't think you will be selling any of your Poser items over there.

I'm NOT getting into a Poser-DAZ war, but it would make more sense now to move the Smith Micro official Poser forums over here. At least at HW3D we don't have the mega sniping wars of other sites.

Hopefully we will see new vendors appearing, I have seen people coming back to HW3D, waves to Jan19, and I am looking forward to new views and ideas.

The only reason I kept going back to RDNA was for the great Poser scripts they had, I hope someone brings talent like this back to the Poser users for us to play with.

RDNA is dead, long live HW3D and Dana3D.

All the best.

Richard
