Yes, the hairstyle is very much like the ones used in the old silent movies, or certainly old black & white movies.
She started off in vaudeville actually, and stage plays. Unfortunately she died in 1979, but she did play Vi, in the movie Grease. That's Joan Blondell. She also played in one of my favorite tv shows as a kid, Here Come The Brides.

That's her? Wow, I didn't recognize her at all! I loved Here Come The Brides, too!

The hairstyle is from that period, although Joan was actually fairly young at that age. By the time she got into movies, they were actually making "talkies". Here she is in a shot from 1930.
