During Katrina, thousands of pets had to be abandoned in during evacuation. Consequently, the Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act (PETS) was created and became law on October 6, 2006. It requires any state seeking Federal assistance (FEMA) after a disaster to accommodate pets and service animals when evacuating residents.
Sometimes politicians do the right thing. But, it's a shame it had to take the loss of so many pets for a law like this to be created.
Two Georgia republicans opposed the law as they felt it would "unfairly impose federal control over state governance and negatively impact resources from other areas of emergency planning necessary to protect human lives." As if humans are the only important life form on this planet. /cough.
