oh and before I could not sit reading a book (for reasons of neck/back muscles locking up and no, can't read for long periods on screen either) I did read the Aragon series....well the first 2 and so got the film asap...and was VERY disappointed, especially in the second one...

I never read the books, but the film was so awful it was hilarious. :roflmao: I actually feel pretty bad for Paolini. By all accounts he's a decent writer, but no one deserves such an awful fate as to have the stuff they wrote at 15 published. Except Jane Austen; Love and Friendship is a masterpiece of satire and wit, even if the author was seventeen at the time of writing. ;) But we can't all be Jane Austen; I cringe to think of anything I wrote as a teenager being published, whether it be the novels I thought were a good idea at the time or my incredibly angsty teenage poetry. :p

speaking of books gone to movies... since I JUST got my Blue Ray of part 2 of Mockingjay, I'm rewatching the first two Hunger Games, then will move on to both my unwatched Mockingjay movies...(would not watch part 1 till 2 came out).... I LIKE those movies a LOT...I never read the books so it's all good for me! :)

and hey, @Zaarin is that a real otter!? Love it, but very curious about your new avatar!

I read three of the Inheritance books (Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr), but don't remember if I read Inheritance. With every book I asked why the heck I kept punishing myself by reading them ... especially, as I purchased the hard cover books.

Granted, Paolini was 15, but you'd think he was the next Tolkien from all the comments about how FABULOUS the books were. I found the characters extremely annoying (I so hate whiny heros). But what really killed it for me was that so much of it didn't seem "influenced by" but copied from.

Still ... he was only 15. I'm sure if I ever found the book I wrote as a high school senior, I'd probably think it was rather ridiculous.

Yes! But we really need a good river otter model--Lontra canadensis preferably, but Lutra lutra would be fine too. ;) I wouldn't say no to a sea otter (Enhydra lutris), either.

That's the impression I got from the film. Okay, Luke Skywalker, who stole Aragorn's name, is off to save Arwen, I mean Erwen, and...Yeah, there's reference and then there's straight up stealing. But as you say, he was fifteen. Sometimes when I need a good laugh, I read the six-book sci-fi series I wrote between 12 and 14. It's hilariously bad. Then the stuff I wrote between 14 and 16 was just cringe-worthy bad--waaaaay worse than the 12-14 stuff. Like I said above, his parents may have thought they were doing him a favor by publishing his teenage works, but he would have been so much better off had they waited to published the stuff he wrote in his twenties. Or thirties. I get it--I wanted to be a teenage sensation too. I thank God that didn't happen, because I know I'm so much better at writing now.

(Interesting piece of trivia: I bought Poser to do reference pieces for my books. I have never once used it for that purpose. :p Actually, I have once--but it's not really a terribly accurate depiction of my character, since my character has a lot of tattoos and I am horrible at texturing. Really I just used it to decide whether I liked him with heterochromia or not--I decided I did. So his left eye is dark green and his right eye is brown.)

Zaarin, you are spot on with your teeny comment at the end. HW is a sane, civilised and polite-without-being-saccharine space in a mad, trolling world and I love it here. And goodness knows, we do go off on some tangents and no-one gets mad and waves a stick. I don't think a disagreeable nasty type would last long here without being encouraged to either shape up or ship out. And by all of us peeps cos we don't seem to require a lot of modding ~bows in appreciation in the general direction of Alisa the Wonderful~

Awwwwww.....*blushes* thank you. Tis true that people round here seem to generally understand how to behave, and if not, gentle reminders usually work.

*takes out stick to wave*

Sharing is caring. ;) I like mine in cheese, mustard, or white chocolate peppermint bark*--but not all at the same time. ;)

*Why oh why do companies only sell peppermint at Christmas? I want my Bailey's peppermint bark creamer and Trader Joe's peppermint bark pretzels year round, thank you very much! Almost as much as I wish that Bailey's would make a chai spice creamer. Chai + coffee = bliss...

Interesting. I read all 3 of the Inheritance books just last year, and I kind of liked them. Granted they weren't as good as a lot of other fantasy book series I've read, but I found them enjoyable enough to keep buying the next book as I finished each one. I didn't know they had made a movie based on this series.

One of the book series I really liked a lot was by Jim Butcher, the author of the Harry Dresden books, called Codex Alera. There were 6 books, IIRC. Has anyone read those?

Another, darker, series I've been reading the past few years (newest came out in January), is by Barb and JC Hendee (husband and wife), called the Noble Dead. There are a lot of dark moments in it, so not for the faint of heart, but I'm really liking it. I don't see these being turned into movie(s), but you never know with Hollywood.

*passes around the pretzels and chocolate*. Cheese or white choc peppermint bark sound good but you can have all the mustard. Don't like it and am allergic anyway...

*Munches*

Now THAT'S the sort of stick I like :) I've never thought of dipping them in chocolate!
oooh, chocolate covered pretzels are awesome!

Ok, I am going to go take a break (since we're discussing tv) and go watch season 2 of Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries which we got out of the library..then an early bedtime so I can get up early and back to work ;)

The Codex Alera is nothing like any of the Harry Dresden books. Where the Dresden books are more urban fantasy, IOW, fantasy characters like wizards in a normal everyday environment like the city of Chicago, the Codex Alera books take place in a fantasy world with a number of non-humanoid characters, so totally different types of writing, but yeah, I like the way he writes as well.

I love mustard--yellow mustard, black mustard, Dijon mustard...I have a lot of allergies, but unfortunately none of them are to things I dislike. I'm allergic to ginger; I love ginger. I have a mild dairy allergy, but I eat it (in moderation) anyway except for plain milk, heavy cream, or ice cream. I couldn't be allergic to something I hate like celery or pineapple or fish. :p At least I'm not allergic to some of the things I really love like coffee or cardamom or mustard. :D Hmm, I just had Indian food for lunch today, but now I'm craving it again... :D

I purchased and listened to all six of the Codex Alera books, but darned if I can place them. I may have to listen to them again once I've finished Elantris.

I never got into audio books. Something about sitting still and paying attention to them would just put me to sleep, and listening to them while I'm doing something else? Nah, that won't work.

I'd kind of like to listen to the Children of Húrin audiobook simply because it was done by Sir Christopher Lee, who as far as I'm concerned could read the phone book and make it fascinating. But in general I agree; I continue to insist my books be printed on dead trees. ;)

My book buying has transferred to digital media simply because I can AFFORD them and also because my boat murdered so many of the paper ones. Leaks turn paper into mouldy mache and break my heart to boot. Some of my favourite books have been ruined and unable to be replaced digitally but not LoTR thank goodness. I still have hundreds of dead trees, stacked four deep on some shelves so I'm not completely lost to the real thing ;)

I definitely get that there are practically reasons for going digital; I just don't enjoy reading from a screen myself. The only time I find digital books more convenient is when I'm doing research for my books, because a PDF is so much easier to take notes from: highlight, copy, paste is a lot easier than typing notes by hand. ;) But reference books cost a fortune, so it's usually cheaper to buy them used. :(

I switched to Kindle books when I started having problems reading books. With the Kindle, I can enlarge the font if necessary ... which means no more tired eyes 15-20 minutes into reading. And ... I can easily carry dozens (many, many dozens) of books around with me, so I always have a backlog of books ready to start when I finish one. It's also ever so much cheaper since there are so many free books on Amazon that interest me. $20+ a week gets rather expensive when you're addicted to hard backs. I also ran out of bookcase space 10-15 years ago. It's going to be forever before that happens with the Kindle.

Audio books are fantastic for commuting. Invariably when listening to the radio, I'd have to listen to "personalities," who quite frankly ... annoy me. Then the switch to Christmas music ... sometimes as early as before Thanksgiving ... absolutely drove me bonkers. I'm simply not a fan of Christmas music. Music is ok, but it's just nowhere near as entertaining as listening to stories.
