Runtime DNA merges with DAZ 3D

Ok now I'm confused :oopsie:

I'll explain it this way, Zygote Media Group had two divisions working for them-- one group did 3D medical/science models (for high end 3D programs) and the other did 3D art/hobbyist models (for the Poser program). Chris, Chad, Rob (and I think Dan) worked in this division. In 2000, Zygote decided to focus entirely on the medical/science content . The "hobbyist" division spun off to form it's own company, "DAZ", and took all the now "unwanted" Zygote Poser-oriented content with them.

Wow I did not know that...I knew that DAZ was not the program...Studio is the program...DAZ is the site...I also knew that poser and DAZ were together...but not that Poser created DAZ...pickle mine...you learn something new everyday!
Poser did not "create" DAZ. Zygote was the company that supplied the figures for the first few versions of Poser. DAZ branched off from Zygote.

...and at that time, there was no DAZ Studio program...that came later, right? Digital Art Zone was originally for Poser content?

Yes, DAZ Studio was created because Poser's long term existence was in question after Curious Labs folded. Without a 3D program it is much harder to sell content for it, so making a program that you controlled the fate of, made good business sense. Poser has had many owners; Fractal Design, MetaCreations, Curious Labs, eFrontier... It seems that Poser has finally found a good and supportive home at Smith-Micro.

Thanks Ken, for taking time to clarify...good to know our real history from folks who were there. I started with 3D in very late 2005, and didn't really get actively involved until 2006. I started with a very early version of DS, then after I'd been involved with 3D awhile, CP had a leap year sale and e-Frontier Poser 6 was $2.49...haha...so that was my launch into Poser. If I remember correctly, CP was also giving away Curious Labs Poser 5 around about the same time. So, earlier than Michael 2 and 3, I had no knowledge of the history of Poser.

Hey Skylab, did you know that Poserworld is older than DAZ? Although DAZ was the first store I ever bought anything from, technically. I used to download a ton of stuff from Poserworld for free! All of it was for the Zygote figures at the time though. Later, they did start adding stuff for Michael and Vicky. There was also Faeryworld if I can remember back that far.

Yes, Poserworld and DAZ store were the first two places that I "discovered" by googling for 3D info at the time. Then I joined CP, then 3D Commune...Rendo, and finally RDNA. It was mostly through forum discussions that I even learned that there were other places where hobbyists could go. We were much more free to discuss what was going on at other stores in the forums back then...and when freebies were released, everybody stampeded in that direction...haha. It was just an accepted way of interacting on the forums at the time...which made it all the more confusing when it was no longer accepted, when things began to change and be competitive. It ruined the playful comradery to which we'd become accustomed. I'm so pleased that it is returning here at Hivewire.

Yes, as has Bryce. I didn't get into Poser until version 5, and I "think" it was with Curious Labs at that point.

I don't recall now where I originally got Bryce from, but had already upgraded to Bryce 5 before DAZ obtained it. IIRC, weren't both Poser and Bryce original owned/created by the same company? Probably Fractal Design. Wish I had known that company then, because I've been a Fractal fanatic since my first DOS based computer back in the mid-80s, or was that just the "name" of the company?

I think Fractal Design is the only one that was before my time. :) I started all of this in 2002.

Metacreations owned both Bryce and Poser when I first arrived in the 3D hobby, and I recall the release of the 4.02 patch for Poser, not long after I bought the software - maybe three, four months afterwards? I think the switch from the P4 male/female was just beginning when I first got into the hobby. I vividly remember first getting my hands on Mike2 and basically going to town with it! It was a WOW factor of a thousand just to have the ability to pose individual fingers and find all the extra boned body parts (even though I didn't know that's what it was called back then). And I remember when things changed from Zygote to Daz; this was a period of time where I was still so new to everything that I was confused as hell about what clothes worked with which figure and how to tell that on the freebie descriptions... LOL I was as green as the prairie back then!

I stuck with Poser pretty much up until Pro2010, and then my hardware just could no longer deal with it, and I ended up migrating to Studio with loud, VERY LOUD growling and snarling as my Bear would tell you - objections. :roflmao: I hated, HATED it. I do remember the very first public beta of Studio, I remember posting the ONLY render I managed to eek out of it and basically saying in the comments "NEVER AGAIN!!" and ripping it off my system right after that. I hated, HATED it! LOL I only really came into DS as a user once I got my hands on 4.3; before the UI changes between 3.x and 4.x, Studio was utterly unusable for me, and would lead to long snarling and growling and cussing sessions if I tried to use it. LMAO

I think 3DCommune was the first site I found, followed by Renderosity, and then Daz. Poserworld was a put-off for me because at the time it just looked like the models were sloppily made and put out just for speed, plus the whole paying for it thing, which we couldn't afford for me to do back then. I was living totally on freebies, except for the base figures. I did eventually end up getting a lifetime subscription, and I do from time to time give Poserworld some paypal donations just because I find their models, while very simple and usually lo rez, are VERY useful to me and I do use them a lot. I found RDNA sometime around 2003, I think, as well. It was very early on for me.

I started making freebies in 2004, I think. Heck, the first thing I released, I made it out of just a bunch of Poser4 primitives! LOL :) And I just kind of took off running from there. I still use the P4, Gen2, and Gen3 figures at times... and the Gen4's. Occasionally I still come out with freebies for the Gen3's as well as the Gen4's and Genesis 1.

I might or might not end up selling exclusively through the site here; some of what I make really can be too gritty for HW's tastes, but if I end up with items like that for market, I would probably take the items to Dana and/or Sanbie's site. I know both places are looking for vendors, and I do not know if HW would really *want* a bunch of Gen4 M4/V4 items in the store here or not. I use them as much as the HW figures, so I kind of end up making content for them as well. LOL

I got addicted to this hobby too quickly to ever give it up once I started. ;) And at this point I think I've finally landed home. I do remember the days of freebies; almost everything we needed could be found in the free zones. Yes, we still had the marketplaces, but you could find the vast bulk of what you needed in the freebie areas. Now that's very difficult to do, as the majority of free content depends on a paid content item in some fashion or other. I was not fond of the attitude changes on the forums over the years in terms of silencing people who had issues, or silencing people from sharing links and other needed information. This is a hobby that NO one learns on their own; it depends on being able to get and give help to from and to others. We all learn and develop together, it's as simple as that.

Sorry, I didn't mean to go on for so long! I'll shut up now.

That's so funny, Seliah! I was the complete opposite! When the UI changed with DS 4 I went ballistic. Deleted it muttering curses and refused to install it again till about 4.5, when DS3A started throwing glitches all the time and pretty much became unusable with my old motherboard. My biggest gripe was 'Finder 2' didn't work in DS4 and I could no longer find my stuff. After much faffing about I found a database called 'Everything' which is just great. It updates on the fly which I LOVE!

I agree Seliah...and I try to remember that folks who are just starting out in 3D need those freebies, just like we did, or they'd never progress enough to have confidence to invest in it as a hobby. And as they mature, and find their strengths, they in turn will give back to the community. But that cycle cannot work if at some point we become stingy either with knowledge or free content.

LOL!! You know, I do VERY vividly recall the hoo-haw on Daz's forums when they first changed the UI between 3.x and 4.x, too. I remember staring at all these posts of people having utter conniption fits, and all I could think was "...but I actually LIKE this UI... it was the previous UIs that were utter crap!" LMAO :D

I never bothered to post in any of those threads. I try to avoid flame fests as much as I can, as I don't have the patience for it these days and they basically dont' serve any constructive purpose. But that's really funny! Just goes to show how differently people's minds work!
