Moose and Squirrel

It has been more than a year since there is any activity here. Has the squirrel been forgotten? Just to stimulate interest in the subject, I'd like to pose this question: What do you get in places where there are no squirrels, like in the northern island of Luzon in the Philippines? You get Cloud Runners (Cloud rats).

Giant bushy-tailed cloud rat (Crateromys schadenbergi). This is very squirrel-like.

the Giant bushy-tailed cloud rat looks a little like our Aussie possums, and that one kinda reminds me of a ferret a little bit
Yes they do although the 'giant" in their name suggests that they are quite large, up to 87 cm long in total length and 1.5 kg in weight. And yes, Dinigat at first glance can be easily mistaken as Dingbat (LOL). Dinigat and Panay are two small islands among the many small islands between the two big islands of Luzon and Mindanao. Dinigat is the little one on the Eastern side of the archipelago and Panay, one of the larger islands, is on the Western side. There are four species of squirrels in the Philippines, two endemic to Mindanao and adjacent islands, such as Bohol, Leyte, Samar, and Siargao, and two to Palawan island to the West of the Philippines: the Philippine tree squirrel (Sundasciurus philippinensis), the Mindanao tree squirrel (Sundasciurus mindanensis), the Northern Palawan tree squirrel (Sundasciurus juvencus), and the Southern Palawan tree squirrel (Sundasciurus steerii). None exist in the North except where introduced by humans.

The Malabar Giant Squirrel is the most colourful, but there are three other species:

The Grizzled Giant Squirrel, also from India.

The Cream-coloured Giant Squirrel from Southeast Asia.

The Black Giant Squirrel also from Southeast Asia. This is also quite a spectacular animal. Its head-to-body length is a whopping 35-50cm, and its tail is another 50-60cm on top of that. It can weigh more than 1.5kg. It may not be bigger than the Malabar but it it certainly longer.

They are ALL gorgeous. Why does that top one get the name "grizzled"? Seems quite attractive to me!
