Haha! I just got awarded the 'Addicted' trophy! It's now official and I have the trophy to prove it..."hello, my name is Lorraine and I am a 3D addict"

LOL. Sorry, I think we're still waiting on our shipment of t-shirts and mugs for the Addicts Club... ;)

I took a bus ride up there when I was in high school, and it seemed to take forever, though we probably made stops along the way. It's funny, because back then I thought it was up at the northern border of the state. ~LOL~ Boy was I embarrassed when I looked at a map and saw it wasn't.

Hah! When I was in 6th grade, the end of year field trip was supposed to be this big bus ride to your city... and I remember thinking "Why do I want to go see just another concrete forest? I want the real forest!" lol.

I had no interest in going. But it was a way to get out of my house for a good 18 hours, so I went... I could never live there! Never. I need my forests, and at least in this area, we might technically be a city, but I can take a walk about ten minutes from the house and still find thick enough trees to disappear in. ;)

Actually we have 2 very large parks that have lots and lots of trees. Central Park, and Forest Park (I kid you not about the name) is only slightly smaller. I grew up across the from Forest Park, and used to ride my bike through there all the time. Of course there were also tennis courts and handball courts (where I spent most of my junior high and high school afternoons).

In fact, our high school graduation was at the large band shell a short walk in from the street, because our graduating class was too large to accommodate more than one parent per kid in the school's auditorium. Ours was the first time they did it there, and it was such a huge success, they continued to do it every year thereafter. Of course it's been decades, so I don't know if they still do that.

IIRC, they also had riding stables somewhere round there, but I never went.

Lorraine, I hope all goes well with the storm.

Learn something new every day. :)
Seliah, I 'm used to our winters lowest temp being below zero at least once (hasn't done so yet this winter) and summer highs above 110 a number of times but hadn't realized that there were places in New England that had as big (or bigger) a high-low difference.

Good morning Terre :) We don't know yet whether the cyclone is going to track down on us and all we can do is wait and see. And I will be on the boat, I got my weeks mixed up. Will be stocking up tomorrow with food, water, petrol and LPG, just in case.

Good morning. :)
Well... short of going to a doctor for an x-ray I'm as sure as I can be that the pain I've had in my right shin for the last two months is splints. Giving my leg more rest breaks and most importantly slowing down my walking speed has helped already. I just need to remember to NOT zip around at my normal 3-3.5mph speed at work on that tile covered concrete slab. If I can find shoes with a more shock absorbing sole that will fit me it should help as well. Length isn't a problem. I'm 7 1/2 (American style measurements) which is very common. Width is the problem. They haven't made AAAA shoes as a matter of course since the mid '70s. What is called "narrow" nowadays seems to be about AA.

Ouch, Terre, that is not a fun thing to have! It really hurts! I had it years ago from walking way too fast down a very long steep hill in hard shoes and it took ages to heal. Even now, every so often, it will flair for a day or so. Straight on to the bed with my legs flat go I. Hope it gets better soon.

A thought: you can get really good orthopaedic gel insoles for shoes...have you tried them?

Terre

No I haven't but that might be a workable answer. Depends on the size of shoes I can get. My toes can only take a little bit of pressure on the nail before it starts having problems. Simply bumping lightly into the top of the shoe all day is too much and most insoles that are thick enough to be useful in this case cause that small bit of pressure.

Gel insoles - you can double them up if there's enough room in the shoe, just make sure the insoles are not sliding around against each other if you do (superglue to glue them together, turning them into a "single" insert helps with this).

Double your socks up also, if need be. Additionally, you can practice walking heel to toe but roll your foot don't just plop it down. If you roll your foot through the step, you won't be sending so many shocks up through the leg and will reduce the impact of your steps.

Just my thoughts - things I've seen my brother do for his. :)

Good idea. Seliah. I already wear two pairs of socks in warm weather (just because I can't get shoes that fit) and three in cold (I get cold very easy) but rolling from heel to toe isn't something I'm used to doing and I think I need to change that.

Afternoon all :) And it's finally sunny! Woohoo! AND I had a good night's sleep. Things are looking good!

Yep. What my brother says helps him the most is to start the step on the back of the heel, roll the entire foot forward in a smooth motion. You might find yourself rolling along the outside edge of the foot when you do this. If it bothers you or tires your ankle out, then practice doing the roll without allowing the outer edge of your foot to do the work, but part of that happening is just the natural distribution of weight and motion with how our bodies are made.

Rolling is definitely preferable, even in people who don't have to fight with splints, because it doesn't shock the joints and bones as much. Also, you may find that your steps end up coming out more quietly with this method, too... the rolling step is something he taught me to do when I was a kid, and is something he makes sure he does now because of the splints he's had from years of running with 90+ LB rucks on his back. LOL

But yeah. Don't be surprised if people don't always hear you approaching, once you get into the habit of walking that way. ;) I am so quiet on my feet, even in boots, that I usually will announce my presence long before I'm in reach, unless the person is looking right at me and sees me coming. I've had people jump out of their skins because they did not hear me coming up until I tried to speak at a normal conversation-distance away. :roflmao:

I'm one of those people who jump out of their skin when someone comes upon me unaware. I've been known to scream in fright which is such a sissy thing for the independent, I can do anything, type person I am.

Thanks for the tips. It'll take some practice but since I have congenital knee problems this should help with them too. :)

I don't like folks walking up behind me without me knowing either. I've been know to scream. ~shakes head~

I know, makes us look such sissys, doesn't it, Miss B. And we are so not. I have been known to threaten to bloody the sneak up's nose if it was on purpose. "But it's so funny when you squeal!", grrrrr!

I'll try to not sneak up on you mam.

Thank you, Terre, you're a pal :)

I hope you are getting a good rest, Pen. :)
Sort of did as it looks like I wasn't only tired and grumpy but tired, grumpy and sick...been home all week on antibiotics except for Tuesday as I dragged myself in for parent teacher interviews...no way I was going to reorganise 18 meetings. The good thing though is it's forced me to rest and I've been doing a lot of sleeping.

Good morning. :)

Look after yourself Terre...

I hope everyone else is being careful and looking after themselves in the weather they are having...
