I also love the night hours! It's the only time of the day when it's actually quiet here. But, it's also more than just the quiet, the air feels different at night. More ... alive, which probably doesn't make all that much sense since most people are asleep ... as are a lot of animals.

If you're lucky to live in an area that isn't overpopulated (and overlit), the night sky is SO totally amazing. I spent nine months living on Nantucket Island, and will never forget how brilliant the night sky was from January until late May (which is when Nantucket Island is invaded).

Couldn't agree with you more Satira! Winter in these parts usually means clear skies and time to dig out the telescope and head for the hills of the Lake District which block out the glow from Lancaster, the nearest city! About an hours drive all told, but what a world of difference! Silence, solitude and the feeling that you are standing on the edge of another, older world just on the edge of vision plus that beautiful, endless infinity of stars. OK! It may be cold and remote for some people but for me, and grandaughter Sara who sometimes keeps me company, it feels like we've never been more alive!

I must have read Tea with the Black Dragon and The Grey Horse at least 10 times each. So sad that we lost the author before she could write more.

@Desertsilver : This is from the Wikipaedia article I linked too: R. A. MacAvoy was diagnosed with dystonia (a neuro-muscular disorder causing painful sustained muscle contractions) following the publication of her Lens of the World series in the early 1990s. She now has the disorder under control and has returned to writing.

Myth: I grew up camping, hiking and backpacking in the Rockies. Night skies look so much better even than in this small town (13.000 people).

Thank you for this! I had read that she died a few years ago. I'll definitely keep an eye out for her new work!
Yay!!!

Just stumbled on Dreamer's Pool, by J. Marilliar, looks to be a good storyteller with engaging characters.

I'm not sure I've ever read a book by Juliet Marillier I didn't love. She is a fabulous storyteller, and one definitely gets attached to her characters.

My first Amazon purchase of a Juliet Marillier book was Daughter of the Forest (The Sevenwaters Trilogy, Book 1) on July 6, 2001.

Thanks for the info, Satira- I so love finding a new author that my daughters and I haven't noticed yet. Between her and MacAvoy, I'm set for Christmas gifts!

I've not read any of her books, but I just checked out the first one in the Sevenwaters Trilogy, and it looks good. I haven't been reading much in the fantasy genre lately, so it'll be good to get back to it with what looks like a good set of stories.

Another author to watch. Phillip Pullman of the His Dark Materials trilogy. He's just released the first volume of The Book of Dust: La Belle Sauvage which charts Lyra's life leading up to the events of His Dark Materials. It begins with Lyra as a 6-month-old baby and her adventures with Malcolm and Alice. I enjoyed it immensely and can recommend it without reserve! :)

Yep. Read Phillip Pullman's The Golden Compass and The Subtle Knife ages ago. I'm not sure off hand whether I read The Amber Spyglass. Oh yes. I did. Just checked Amazon, and I ordered The Amber Spyglass October 13, 2000.

I read the Golden Compass over a decade ago, but I don't think I read either of the other two books.
