The ones that I really consider 'snowbirds' are those in the big motorhomes.That is sad, yes. And snowbirds isn't exactly accurate but since many do come there to escape the snow it does sort of fit.

That's how I became familiar with it as well, as back in high school and college, my best friend's parents always headed down to Boca Raton during the winter.I first heard the term being used for people from the north who winter in Florida.
Ha! Flummery!To be fair to StudioMartillo there is a second newer group of people that we Westerners also call snowbirds. This group flocks to places like Angel Fire Resort - Ski New Mexico to play when the snow is deep enough.

I assumed SM meant winter residents because my MIL complains about the winter only residents in her condo association in Scottsdale and the photos SM showed of the local area looked like a good spot to escape from the snow.
