The Mimic

The Pink Orchid Mantis is just one of several species of Mantis that are known as “flower mantis”. Besides its unique physical form it moves with a “swaying” motion, as if being “blown” in the breeze.

Beauty and the Beast

In Mantises sexual cannibalism is common, with the female attacking and eating the male after, during, and even before mating. Eating her mate provides the female with nutrients so she does not have to hunt. The meal also gives her more resources for the faster production of a large egg sac with large eggs, thus increasing the chance of her offspring to survive.

Detour-Construction Ahead

The African Dung Beetle rolls the dung balls it collects in a straight line for some distance, despite all obstacles. They then bury the dung ball & lay an egg in it. After hatching the growing larva feed on the dung, pupate and eventually emerge as an adult.

Flower Beetles

The Figeater Beetle is a member of the scarab beetle family. Its habitat is primarily the southwestern United States. But their range has expanded considerably since the 1960s with the increasing availability of home gardens, compost piles, and organic mulch, which the larvae eat.
