I asked Lisa about this list and spammers seeing it, and she said it's not for spammers. It's more a "warning" to new legit members NOT to use any of those words in their first 3 posts, or they'll go to moderation, and possibly be banned.

It goes with a new notice that pops up until a person has made 3 posts. The notice says:

"Please do not post any links until you have 3 posts as they will be rejected to prevent spam. Many words are also blocked due to being used in spam messages. You can view these "Blocked Words" here. This also affects signatures and "About You" in your profile."

Don’t you hate it when pills get stuck in your throat! Happened to me last night when I took a viagra... woke up this morning with a stiff neck! :geek:

Seems to be a reasonable precaution and I guess the rule can always be modified based on any experience going forward such as adding words or extending the number of posts. I also suspect you need to be a little cautious in any forum where the aim is to be family friendly. I know that this is regarded as prudish by some and others feel the forums are too nice but that always makes wonder why that should be the case. If you really want to find a forum where the flame wars, personal attacks and non family friendly content is common it is really not difficult to find on the Internet. What is so wrong with those that do not want such content having a place on the Internet, membership is not compulsory after all.

I have been told of one forum where certain words get automatically substituted for a different word- it's how they handle people trying to post swearwords- so this is not the only forum where there is an automated method for maintaining forum policy on language.

In this case, however, it's only for the first 3 posts by legitimate new members, and those listed above aren't swearwords, so to speak. I know Renderosity has a "language" advisory which can be added if someone's using that sort of language, but I'm not sure if the person posting the swearwords are "supposed to" add it, or if it's automatically added when the forum software, or a moderator, spots them. Then again, they have other advisories which can be added to posts, such as non-family friendly renders, which we don't allow at all on this forum.

The sad thing is I have a box of legacy Socket 7 Motherboards from my days building systems still sealed in anti-static bags I can't list on Ebay because their brand name triggers Ebays filters... VIAGRA. I hate the thought of just scrapping them, but that's what I will likely have to do.

We do have certain words entered in the back end that will be censored if they are used in the forum.

This "blocked words" method is one thing in a combination of things meant to cut back or eliminate the amount of people signing up with the specific intent to spam the forum. We have better things we could be spending time on than constantly banning spammers.

Given the nature of the subject matter here, it is highly unlikely that a member will post using any of the blocked words, but I wanted to be sure people are informed as this doesn't just affect new members, but also those who have been members but have never posted.

I guessed from the list that the aim was to try and prevent spam messages, we have had a few here but nowhere near as much as other forums. I can't really understand why people bother with such spams, you would think they would have better things to do with their life.

Spam filtering. Such fun.

Most of the spamming is from bots that can hop ip addresses using various methods, change tactics, many can even get around captcha's, or whatever other security methods you put into place. There is obviously someone making money doing it, but how or why they bother to do it still boggles me.

They are using huge zombie networks (other people's computers that have been infected with software that allows the spammers to use them remotely), so there is next to no cost to the spammers because someone else is paying for the Internet connections and electricity. They are using automation software to send the messages so there is next to no work or time involved for them. They are sending out millions of messages and they are getting a commission on every successful sale resulting from a click on the spam message. Even if only one percent of messages result in a sale and commission is five percent, that's five hundred or more of your monetary units of choice per product (whether that's pills or website membership or whatever) for next to no input, per product. Depending on the product, the click rate can be better and the commission can be far higher. People bother spamming because they make money doing it.

It's hard to imagine anyone serious about joining the forum using the word Viagra in their first three post. "I'm new here and want to talk about Daz Studio and Viagra."

Good point Lisa, as we have had lurkers over the years that finally post on the forum after having been memebers for quite a while.
