Arak Thrul
Monstrous Troll
Caption
TITLE:"Arak'Thrul"
MEDIA:"Pencil Illustration"
YEAR: 1998
BACKGROUND:
"It rose from the marshy mists and confusion of the battlefield. Towering above the ranks of embattled men and beasts. A lumbering, massive, form. Like a man, but not like a man. Immense, over twelve feet tall, despite its haunched, squatting, brutish posture. It had broad shoulders, and a powerful build, exaggerated by its narrow waist. Its skin was a sickly green, covered in ridges, fur, and bone like callouses, and its great hands had razor edged talons. Glowing white eyes, like embers of a brilliant fire, peered out from 'neath a mop of long, matted, greasy hair, set into a bestial face. Great, blood soaked tusks jutted from either side of a fang ridden maw, and two jagged, angular nostrils flared..."

A conceptual sketch of a fantasy monster I did some years back. The scan does not do it justice. Ok, much better than the last scan...

This image was created entirely with a Number two, hard lead pencil (those are almost impossible to find nowadays, but I still have a few in my stockpiles). The image was created on a medium tooth drawing surface, found in a leatherbound, Tara sketchbook (as are most of my works). The original image is 8.5 x 11 inches. For some odd reason, the spray sealer I used seems to have yellowed the page (which is odd considering it clearly says "non-yellowing Archival sealer"); this gives the page an almost surrealistic parchment look, so I guess it's not that bad.
