Marvin Gaye, but there was another, earlier version released by Gladys Knight and the Pips. There were a lot of recordings released over the years, including one by The Miracels, and one by Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Sorry, but I've never heard of them.
Always loved the Righteous Brothers recording of this song, but always thought it strange that Bobby Hatfield was the only one singing the song, and the one time I saw "them" preform the song on a TV show, Bill Medley was nowhere to be seen.
According to Wikipedia, Bill Medley is still a member, but Bobby Hatfield isn't.

Bobby Hatfield died in 2003 at the age of 63.
