Thanks, so far have got the truffles made, choc dipped some strawberrys, made a small dish of jelled beetroot and a bowl of couscous salad. once my boy is in bed I'll start shelling the walnuts I need for the roast pumpkin salad and get the clean washing folded

No, Terre, not the sort of excitement I go for.

And I'm just a bit bruised and have a sore shoulder where I was lifted up, Pen, plus the odd graze from the dock. It has been forcibly suggested to me that I avoid the club dock during the cruising season, and I will as much as I can.

Pav, my favourite dessert bar none! I'm going to make myself a small one and scoff the lot on C day. I would make a big one but I'd scoff the lot with that too and maybe, just maybe, that wouldn't be a good idea ;)

Gosh. That would have been entirely too scary!

I'd avoid the club dock from the sheer humiliation of the experience!!!

I read an article yesterday that talked about the vast amount of food trashed in the UK on Christmas. Apparently, it's extremely common ?!? for cooks to screw up a dish ... either because they mistimed and burned the food or they ruined it from experimenting. Basically, the writer claimed this is common not just in the UK, but also in the US.

Ok. I am NOT a fabulous "chef" by any means. But, I never screwed up a Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner ... not even the dreaded turkey. Granted, those dinners were rather traditional. Stuff like turkey, stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans (ick), cranberry sauce, rolls, and pies. Usually, the rolls would be brought by others and tossed in the oven just before dinner was served. Sweet Potatoes and additional pies would also be brought by others. Unless the Sweet Potatoes were a specialty of the person hosting. At the worst, dinner took longer than anticipated to prepare (turkeys are such a pain!).

Holiday food waste is so high because most us have no clue what we're doing in the kitchen

Note ... the writer needs to learn the difference between reigns and reins. He recommended inept cooks hand over the reigns to someone who knows what they're doing. I suppose if you rule over a meal like a king or queen ... then you might want to pass on the crown (or scepter) to someone else. But since most of us don't tend to sit on a throne and issue orders regarding the preparation of a holiday dinner, he should have suggested handing over the reins. At least he didn't use rains!

While its shocking to be wasting food how is an inept cook meant to learn? I taught my self to cook in my late teens, started be just following a recipe and then started "playing" with the weekly dinners. I think I only ever ended up having to toss one meal out it was so bad. I had picked up the basics watching mum cook and I think that is the real problem/cause hardly any one cooks any more so kids dont see what mum/dad/gran etc do to put a meal on the table so when they get their own place they can't even boil a pot of water for rice and then try doing some thing far too big and fancy to show that theyareabigkidnowandlookafterthemselves. It all goes pear shaped fast and food gets tossed out and it down to the nearest take out to get some thing edible and so they never learn a) how to cook in the first place and b) how to save a dish when you do stuff it up.

I try my damnedest not to throw any food away, incorporating leftovers into the following nights meals. And I've spent many a Boxing Day and the days after eating leftover Christmas food. But you're right, Dreamer, how do you learn to cook unless you try out recipes? Once you gain a certain skill level you can read a recipe and pretty much know if it's something you can do. I think tv food shows are encouraging a lot of people to try cooking but are at a level much higher than learner and those lots of people are set up for failure. Bring back home economics for all in schools.

Yep...gotta agree that the cooking shows these days are much higher than beginner level.

Australian schools still do cooking but it's called Food Technology. We have our own gardens and chooks at school. The more challenging children are often given the opportunity to go for a walk with someone from leadership to check out the chickens and also are offered the opportunity to participate in our gardening program.

The older students have often helped cater for school events.

My summer solstice got a mite hairy yesterday afternoon. There are gazillions of inflatable dinghies tied up at the cruising club plus boats with very short painters. I managed to barge my way into the mob but upon stepping out, my dinghy got pushed from underneath me. I ended up hanging on to the dock with both arms, feet still in the dinghy, butt in the water, yelling for help. When that help arrived I insisted upon them grabbing my handbag first and saving my phone before they attempted to retrieve me. I suffered bruises to body and pride but the phone stayed dry so I think that's a win.
YIKES!! Glad to hear you're OK, and only bruised.

So I shouldn't mention the potato salad, the smoked chicken and mango salad, the greek salad or the beef kebabs then?:sneaky:
YIKES!! I'll pass on the mango salad, but a taste of each of the others sounds realllll good. :D
