WOW Ken, there's a couple of well known actors in each of those I never knew did those types of movies.

As much as I adore Joan Collins I did read that she was in some pretty bad "B" movies a long while back. LOL

Well, I finished all the morphs (for now) and have all 12 major ant 'types' found in the world (there's over 22,000 subspecies in all). Next, I'll start some textures...

Below is all the different types. It's hard to see the subtle differences in some (other than size), but most have slightly different head, mandible and antenna shapes and different eye positioning. The Honey Pot Ant is shown with it's "full" morph. Select Honey Pot Ants collect and store nectar to feed the colony-- sort of acting like an insect refrigerator.

 For those of you in the U.S. who get Turner Classic Movies, they plan to broadcast "Them!" on Sunday (September 3rd). I've already got it set to record!

I don't know Flint, I think I'm going to have to pass on that. I'm not a fan of that particular genre of films.

Texturing the ants has been much more challenging than I would have expected. I thought I could just paint a simple texture for them.. silly me... after four different attempts, I think I've fallen upon a set of workable techniques to produce the varieties I want to include. Part of the challenge was that ants are a little hairy-- it's sparse enough that most hair painting techniques just look wrong or dumb-- and then, there's glossy skin that's a little translucent.

In any case, here's my first texture-- for the Army Ant. Experts are very clear about what to do in the case of encountering army ants... run away (although walking quickly is probably fast enough). While only 0.39-0.47 inch in size (8-10 mm), they are very aggressive and will attack what ever is in their path, traveling at 60 feet per hour and summoning their entire colony (up to 2 million individuals). Their scissor-like mandibles can cut through human flesh.
