If you need the xyz transforms better aligned for modeling in edit mode.
-I didnt find this for a few months after starting with Blender so you never know...
In the properties panel, goto Transform Orientations and choose "normals"

Is that the same as whats at the bottom left of the screen where it says "normal"? Or is it something different?

It is. But, you can also create custom transforms in the properties panel, they will also then show up in the bottom left.
I dont know the keyboard shortcuts though
